1970s Disco Family Room Makeover

This family room has a bad case of the 1970s. Luckily, Eric has the cure.

1970s Disco Family Room Makeover Eric Stromer: Hey, I'm Eric Stromer with sky high real estate prices. It’s great to find a deal on a real fix you offer. The only problem is you to know how to fix it up. That’s the case with Kelsy Maruyama and her husband Ruben Rodriguez Canoga Park, California. Kelsy: We bought this house a few months ago and my husband suddenly became a painter, a plumber, a carpenter all over night. Eric Stromer: And how was that worked out? Kelsy: He tries to remodel the living room but I don’t think he knows what he’s doing. He thinks he knows what he's doing but I don’t. Eric Stromer: Let me be the judge to that. What do you do? Kelsy: These wood panels had this 70’s disco light mirrors on them, yuck! He started to take the plywood off but there's nothing but frame behind here so he got a little scared and stop. Ruben Rodriguez: I wanted to drywall this area but I found two by four all over the place. My wife kind of gives it a very light and that where on it. Eric Stromer: Well, we’ll be right over to give you the green light because Ruben you're in way over your head. We’ve replace walls tiled an old brick fireplace and paint it. Ruben Rodriguez is finally his room has been brought back to the 21st century. But this is what it looks like when we arrive. Kelsy: I expect to see something totally different than what I had before. I know I'm going to like it I really have a good feeling about it. Eric Stromer: One, two, three open your eyes. Kelsy: Wow! Eric Stromer: You see no more 70’s disco. Kelsy: Oh my gosh! I cannot believe this. This is amazing. Oh my gosh, this isn't my room! Wow! Okay, you fixed that up? Ruben Rodriguez: Do you like it? Kelsy: Guys, do you know what I didn’t think I'd like green but it really looks nice. Eric Stromer: Remember this wall and this wall here it was all this flexible plywood or it was merely in the mirror in place. This is now five inch drywall all retro fitted and perfectly executed. Remember that brick that was completely expose and you didn’t really like that feel very much like the 1970 things? It all covered up. This brand new glass tile and Ruben set all himself laid it up, made it perfect, and grouted it, unbelievable. Kelsy: I love the fireplace, it’s my favorite part and I love it. Eric Stromer: And what about his mantel, I finally figure out our way to center a mantel on the fireplace. Kelsy: I know and now it's not off the green and we have plenty of room for your stuff. Ruben Rodriguez: The favorite part it’s obvious, its beautiful green fireplace that we have now. It’s a tremendous focal point and I'm looking forward to spend some time with some friends and family.
