3M Novec 1230 Fire Protector Mike Agerbo: For many businesses protecting their valuable assets against things like fires an important thing especially if you look at the Art Galleries or Libraries or even Data Centers we got Doug Swystun from 3M to join us today. Thanks for coming on the show. Doug Swystun: Thanks Mike. , Mike Agerbo: Well then talk about how to put out fires without damaging anything. We got something really cool here. I think that the viewers are going to get a kick on. Doug Swystun: Yes it’s a product called NOVEC 1230 and it’s a gaseous fire suppressant. As a liquid, it looks like water and it is stored as a liquid. However, when it is discharged it’s discharged as a gas. There are some very cool properties to the product and this material is sustainable to the product that it’s protecting, as well as the environment and it can be use in occupied spaces. Mike Agerbo: So it won’t kill everyone when the gas comes out? Doug Swystun: If it accidentally goes off and you’re in the room, no. It is safe to be use in occupied spaces. Mike Agerbo: Which isn’t the same for some other types of fire suppressants? Doug Swystun: Correct. Mike Agerbo: Yeah. So this is important for—I think about like a data center with all the electronics and stuff like that. You don’t want to be using sprinklers with water. Doug Swystun: Exactly. Mike Agerbo: It will just kill everything. Doug Swystun: Right and in electronics, if you throw water at them they will short and malfunction and you have to replace them. As a gas and as a liquid, this product its non conductive. Let just show an example of how the product works and we’ll show a little bit how it’s not conductive. Mike Agerbo: So for what I understand, we got the liquid here but there’s also a layer of gas? Doug Swystun: Yes and if we can pour that beaker over and we’re not going to pour the liquid out but we’re going to dump out gas. The gas is heavy so it’s going to flow other the beaker into the cup. Mike Agerbo: I feel really weird here Doug because I can't see anything coming out. Doug Swystun: That’s all right, that’s good at that point. Well a little bit went in there. Now if you take your cup and you just poured overtop of the light out it goes. Mike Agerbo: I feel like David Copperfield. Doug Swystun: It’s wonderful. So again, that’s the gas absorbing the heat from the flame and extinguishes the fire. I brought my laptop and to show the example of electronic components so typical data center—you have lots of servers. You have digital media archive and if the gas comes out or if it’s a liquid by catastrophic event you won’t damage the components. So go ahead and pour this. Mike Agerbo: Are you sure? Doug Swystun: Go ahead and pour it over. Mike Agerbo: I was getting nervous. Doug Swystun: And being a clean agent, there is no clean up. Keep pouring it on, keep going and I’ll just swish it around. Add some more if you like. Mike Agerbo: Okay. Doug Swystun: All right. Mike Agerbo: Let’s go crazy. Doug Swystun: That’s fine. And being a clean agent, it cleans up without any cleaning required so you’re up and operating right away. Mike Agerbo: I can stick my cellphone in here? Doug Swystun: You can stick cellphone in there. Mike Agerbo: Because I want a new cellphone Doug. Doug Swystun: Yeah, well you’re not going to get one.
