Amazing Grace

Hi gang, Your Guitar Sage here! Today, we’re going to learn how to play Amazing Grace. And the way that I’m doing this here is in the key of G to the open position an it’s also in three, four-time or what I called in three-time. Okay and that means three beats per measure and it is just basically like a pulse of a song, a lot of waltzes are in three or six instead of four. So like something that would be in four would sound like [Demonstration]. Something in three would be like [Demonstration]. In this song, Amazing Grace, we’re doing it in three. So it’s going to go like this and I’ll talk about the chords and the rhythm and all that stuff. First here, I’m just going to play it. So it’s going to go [Demonstration/Singing]. Then, we’ll just repeat that. I’m looking at my chart here on my screen, but of course, I’m going to barre out these chords to get to writing. And the chart is basically like a breakdown of all the chords, where to play them and that sort of thing, basically like a shorthand. Okay, so the chords here are it’s going to go G and these are all for one measure a piece, one measure of three beats in this. So here we go, it’s going to go G, G, C, G, E minor, C, D, and another D, G, G, C, G, E minor, D and two Gs. [Demonstration] So, that’s literally the whole tune. You can just repeat it over and over again, all the verses. Now, strumming rhythm, you could do all sort of stuff on this one. You could go, [Demonstration]. That’s your basic strum for it. So you could do that if you want to strum it you know [Demonstration/Singing]. Okay, real basic rhythm there but I’m doing the same thing for every chord, okay. The other thing we could do is maybe like a picking rhythm like [Demonstration]. And basically what I’m doing there is like a thumb, a trouble note and then maybe taking these two fingers and hitting another couple notes together. So it’s like [Demonstration]. Now, if I change the chords like when I go to my E minor, I keep the same fingering and just change my chord with my left hand, like so [Demonstration]. Now going from the G to the E minor is fairly easy because everything is on the same string. When I go to my C, I keep the same treble notes but my thumb has to play, watch my thumb now, I’m going to jump up to the fifth string, but I keep my treble notes going in the same place. That’s keeping your voices close together here, so just making thing sounds nicer without getting too complicated. So all right gang, that’s it Amazing Grace. So it’s fairly easy.
