Amazon Kindle DX Review
Andi: Hello and welcome, to Neo-Fight.Tv the technology for the not so geeky, I am Andi Barnes.
Ben: And I am Ben Freedman and today on the show we are looking at this very cool thin little product. This is the Amazon Kindle DX, it’s the big Amazon Kindle, and you know they have two. They have a big one and they have the small one.
Now a lot of you may heard off Amazon Kindle has been out for awhile. This is the latest version and what it is – is an E-book reader, so the idea is – let’s say you want to go on vacation. And you have a couple of novels or five novels of 10 or 15 or 20. This thing will let download, no computer required because it is connected to the internet.
It will download from Amazon; you can buy books from Amazon up to 3,500 books they say can fit on this one little.
Andi: 3,500 or 35,000?
Ben: 3,500 books on this one little light you know PAD that you can only search for the book that you want. Download it on here and then read it right on here and let me I am going to call up a page here. So people can see the kind of what the text looks to me.
Andi: And you can change the size of the text?
Ben: You can, you can make the text bigger or smaller, you can rotate the screen. Here is an example – this is very regular – I don’t know if you can see that.
Andi: That looks decent a little bigger than your normal look.
Ben: I think you want it slightly bigger than normal because it is Dot Matrix you know.
Andi: Right. And if you could have it – you know if you could read it bigger. Why wouldn’t you right?
Ben: So let me tell you something that I love about this. So I was on a flight to San Francisco couple of days ago as you know and I like – I used to bring books the hard cover books. And they are heavy; I brought this and even though you’re supposed like turned off for your electronics. You know how they say that when the door is closed, I had this and I was reading on my lap, and they go telling everyone turned off.
They came by me and they just looked at it and walked right by. I think they know that the Kindle does not use any battery.
Andi: Right.
Ben: While you are just reading, it only uses battery while you are changing the page. So they make it turn it off and so I watched it all the way taking off and all the way landing.
Andi: Now so that is something that you like about it. I heard it hold 3,500 books – thing that I didn’t like about it is of course. The two books that I went on to download – they weren’t even there.
Ben: This is true, there is a limited library – you know it’s not like.
Andi: I mean it is Amazon, you can get any book imaginable but you can’t get it for this.
Ben: That is right so I have that problem too.
Andi: Right and the price, if you are going to pay I mean this is the larger one. This is $489.00.
Ben: Yeah this.
Andi: $489.00 and the books that I wanted weren’t there.
Ben: Right.
Andi: So for me it’s like.
Ben: Buy you know what you can buy the books you want on Amazon. This makes a really nice bookmark, just slide it right on the book.
Andi: That is true.
Ben: Just hold your page.
Andi: But if I am going to spend $489.00 I could buy a computer, I could buy a laptop and I can download it and I have all the other features of a laptop.
Ben: I find it difficult to argue with that.
Andi: You found but you found the two books that you want it on.
Ben: Well I found several books that I want and the other thing that you know I had the first version of this. I know you didn’t get to see the first version that was a year ago that the first Kindle. Suddenly they have added to this really a like is you can add PDF files to this. And you can view PDF files, so let’s say you get an instruction manual or you get some article or you get something – helicopter.
Andi: The landing.
Ben: Police are coming for you – before we can’t hear that.
Andi: Again?
Ben: Got a helicopter going all the way on the top of the studio. You know if you get a – you know me I have a lot of instruction manual for the cameras we used and for the --.
Andi: And you like reading them all.
Ben: And I like reading news manuals, so I will get a new gear, especially got a new gadget.
Andi: Right.
Ben: A lot of times now the disk – have you notice this, a lot of gadgets now they don’t ship the manuals anymore.
Andi: No.
Ben: They should do getting started guide and if you want the manual it is on the disk. It’s not printed anymore, you don’t go through as many gadgets sites- you don’t know the sites.
Andi: No.
Ben: But I know there is a lot of gadgets now don’t come with manuals. They come with a little two page getting started guide. And the manual is on the disk in PDF format. So you can take that, put the PDF – I will give an example. Something that we just got that we will be reviewing in upcoming episode is the Yamaha MM8 keyboard.
Here is the keyboard.
Andi: Yamaha by the way.
Ben: Yamaha?
Andi: Because it is Yamaha, whatever.
Ben: So anyway I notice that the manual was in PDF format, copied it here from just USB it shows like a hard drive. And look there is the Yamaha MM8 instruction manual.
Andi: But now let me ask you this. When you are reading that in bed and your wife wants to go to sleep and you turned out all the lights. And you want to read it quietly can you?
Ben: No, and why is that Andi?
Andi: Because it has no backlight.
Ben: It has no backlight, this is true and this is another bit of the Achilles Heel and I just trying to get a page here.
Andi: I mean that is what I do most of my reading is before I go to bed.
Ben: Here’s the fairly small text in this, still readable but not quite as really bold.
Andi: If you can make it bigger right?
Ben: Well not in PDF, you can in books but in PDF there are formatted, the pages formatted in a certain way. So you can zoom it on that, you can see that is a page of the Yamaha MM8 manual.
Andi: Yamaha.
Ben: Yamaha, okay so let us review here.
Andi: Okay.
Ben: So I like the fact that it has a huge memory that you can use it on there now. I don’t think it is officially you can use on airplanes but they just they didn’t tell me to turn it off. They saw that I had it and they just walk right y me like they have seen them before.
Andi: Right.
Ben: So they seem to okay with that and I really like the fact that it’s play PDF’s. But on the down side.
Andi: No backlight.
Ben: There is no backlight; you couldn’t find that you wanted.
Andi: Right.
Ben: So, you might want to check if there is a certain author you like and see if it is available on Kindle before you buy a Kindle.
Andi: Right, I mean $489.00 although you can get the smaller one for $200.00 and something.
Ben: Yeah.
Andi: You know I guess it depends on.
Ben: Small ones is more like page like size.
Andi: How much extra cash you have.
Ben: That is right, but I tell you the reading manual and stuff I wouldn’t use the smaller one.
Andi: Right.
Ben: Because the manuals are--
Andi: Because this is small as it is.
Ben: Yeah, imagine that shrug down again.
Andi: Right.
Ben: You know that – this is the small how it wants to go.
Andi: I think it is really neat, I think they are on to something but I don’t think they are there yet.
Ben: Alright so that is the Amazon Kindle. Some good points, some bad points, it’s the version 2 release so maybe wait for the next one. And make sure you carry a book light with you because – with no backlight you will need something to shoot.
Andi: Right.
Ben: And we will have another review coming right after this so please stay tuned.
And we are back and in the second spotlight we are going to be looking at two or three new iPhone cases that were recently been sent which are really cool. And the couples that we are looking at here are by company called iSkin; when you start off with your iSkin solo over there, what is that is all about?
Andi: Well I really like this one because if you look right there it is a mirror.
Ben: I don’t know if you really see it?
Andi: Can you see me looking at myself?
Ben: Yeah.
Andi: Can you see me?
Ben: Can you see the camera? If you see the camera then we will see you.
Andi: Yes.
Ben: There you go.
Andi: You see.
Ben: It’s a mirror, now why would you want a mirror on the iPhone?
Andi: I love this so I can put my lipstick on, so I can freshen up. It is a one last thing I have to have in my purse.
Ben: It’s a mirror?
Andi: This is another reason why I want an iPhone.
Ben: Now by having a mirror on your phone does that not make you difficult to see your phone?
Andi: No, watch. Hold that, open that, now it does make a little bit lighter.
Ben: But you can still see it through there.
Andi: But you can still see it.
Ben: Yeah, that is really and obviously you can still de-touching.
Andi: Exactly, it doesn’t affect at all. I really like.
Ben: That is great – hold it up again let me so that they can see. So that, so when you turn on, the mirror kind of goes away it’s going there.
Andi: Exactly and when you turn it off. It’s turned off.
Ben: Yeah the top button there again.
Andi: And the mirror is back, and it doesn’t even take time like to have reconfigure, it instantly a mirror.
Ben: It’s just boom, its right there. That is really cool so for a gals who want to put on their make-up. Look at that, have you seen I think it’s there; we are talking about the palm pree or something. When you slide the one bit up the back has a mirror on it remember that?
Andi: Right.
Ben: So that is kind of.
Andi: iPhone they think of everything.
Ben: Yeah, now that is either it is hard to tell because it is black but this is also a rubber case on the back here, how is that feel to you?
Andi: So if you dropped it, it might doesn’t feel rubber at all.
Ben: No, it’s good for you know.
Andi: It looks just like the phone.
Ben: Quite of protection.
Andi: I really like it.
Ben: I have very similar that is the iSkins solo effects. And this is the regular iSkin solo; it’s a red one obviously.
Andi: And it is rubber.
Ben: And it is kind of rubbery and I don’t know if you guys can see. I’ve stuck, I tell what I like about this was I always like the idea of mounting my iPhone in the car. And I have tried suction cups there is no good place to my phone in my Explorer. The best place I thought would be right on the middle of the steering wheel.
I got this big center of the steering wheel and there is nothing there. So I though nice small area, you don’t have to look down too much if you know its right below speedometer.
Andi: Right.
Ben: But I didn’t, so I stuck a Velcro on my car but I didn’t want to put any Velcro on the back of my nice phone. So what I did was when iSkin sent me this really cool case now whenever I want it takes in the car. I just basically stick this in here which takes two seconds. And now it got this piece of Velcro as you can see on the back of this case.
Also makes my iPhone nice and cool in red which makes it easy to identify.
Andi: Exactly.
Ben: And such so now whenever I go in the car I take it like this and I just go – and it sits right or if I want to do it this way. And it sits around my.
Andi: Now let me just make it clear, this is so you could check your E-mail while you are driving right?
Ben: Check – no I would never do that it’s for the GPS.
Andi: Okay just making sure. Now that is pretty neat.
Ben: So that a two from iSkin that is the iSkin Solo and the Solo FX that comes with the mirror. And they are both about 30 bucks- you think and then is cool. Now this is a little different and I haven’t you even see this – I mean see what you think. This is by a company called Fabrics and it is kind of a hard shell case that is like fabric.
Andi: Well I know I was looking on their web site and they have some really cool patterns.
Ben: Very funky designs hold it up.
Andi: And I like that, I mean why be normal right?
Ben: Yeah, so show them the back, I don’t know, it’s kind of hard to tell because you know it is black and we have a lot of--.
Andi: But it got those --.
Ben: You see the little lines on there and what it feels like.
Andi: Feels like fabric.
Ben: It is.
Andi: Hard fabric.
Ben: It is like a hard shell fabric case.
Andi: Right.
Ben: Now for me I think I try this and I found a little bulky in my pocket. But if you are – are you a pocketer or a purser or what you do with your phone?
Andi: I am a purser.
Ben: Right, so in your purse I think that will be cool.
Andi: Right.
Ben: And again it protects all the corners from nicks and scuffs.
Andi: I mean it is a little bit thick I mean a tiny bit, but if you like the slim and put in your pocket then.
Ben: So also about 30 bucks.
Andi: Okay not bad.
Ben: So that are three cases, two from our good friends at iSkin and one form the good folks at Fabrics.
Andi: T-Mobile people if you are listening, we need some stuff from iPhone.
Ben: You’re Android, still model on the stuff on the Androids something.
Andi: Yeah, no I am really getting over this iPhone stuff. It is cool though.
Ben: It is all the time we have.
Andi: Sorry – you see I dropped and it protected it.
Ben: You dropped it and hopefully because that is my phone it’s okay. So that is all the time we have for today but tell us what you think about this. Would – you know if you put the Velcro in here, you can actually put your make-up on using this mirror while in driving.
Andi: While in driving, perfect.
Ben: Wow.
Andi: I don’t think anyone would mind?
Ben: Perfect solutions that moved California whatever you did. That is all the time but leave us a comment, tell us what you think if it is too bulky or ridiculous or whatever. Or let us know what you thought of the Kindle, do you use it, do you read it? That is www.neo-fight.tv that is where to go, leave us a comment, which we always like to hear.
Andi: That is right as long as they are good.
Ben: As long as they are good the better ones just don’t tell here about. And if you ever have an extra 30 seconds take a look at this.
Andi: There are no bad ones right?
Ben: Never.
