A taste from the melting pot. Mara McFalls: Welcome to a taste from the melting pot. Hi I'm your host Mara McFalls, and today we're here in downtown Manhattan Nayimah and to learn all about the culture and cuisine of the country where she was born Tunisia, it's a North African country with really long coastline along the Mediterranean Sea and its major flavors are dominated by seafood and spicy hot flavors. Now before we dive into the food lets first take a look at with life is like in Tunisia. Male Speaker: Situated along the sparkling Mediterranean coastline, the country of Tunisia is one of North Africa's brightest jewels from its eastern coastal plains to its Northern Atlas Mountains, to its oasis filled southern deserts. Tunisia's geographical diversity contributes to its rich culture. The area of modern day Tunisia was home to the great City State of Carthage, the dominant Ancient civilization in the western Mediterranean. Throughout its history, many cultures claim the regions fertile lands including Berber tribes, the Romans, Arab dynasties, the Ottoman Turks and the French. Tunisia was officially recognized as an independent State in 1956. The country possesses a diverse Culture and many important economic resources including tourism, manufacturing, mining and agriculture. Tunisia pride itself on being a tolerant Sunni Islam Society that celebrates religious freedoms and appreciates opportunities for women. Tunisia's cultural influences contribute to its lively heritage, the arts are woven into daily life, and every celebration includes rousing music, and spicy cuisine. One of its most unique events - the Sahara Festival, celebrates the traditional life of the desert people. Known for its temperate climate, beautiful beaches, and clear blue seas, Tunisia boasts recreational sports such as sailing, surfing, and golf; as well as team sports like rugby, handball, and football. Because of the country's many tourist offerings, Tunisia draws visitors from around the world.
