Apple 13" MacBook Review Tiffany Young: Hi there and welcome to Neo-Fight.TV, the technology show for the “not so geeky,” my name is Tiffany Young Ben Freedman: And I’m Ben Freedman and we’re back to our normal screen that was a kind of good experiment. Tiffany Young: Oh that was fun. Ben Freedman: Yeah. Tiffany Young: That’s nice. Ben Freedman: This is a real screen. Tiffany Young: You can be anywhere with a green screen Ben Freedman: It is amazing and you know it was great to have a share appearance that named for us a couple of shows ago and that was great. I liked the good comments about that. Tiffany Young: Oh my gosh I could imagine that was a worst impersonation ever until it gets worst from that. Ben Freedman: I think it’s good. Everyone like your impersonation better than mine. I did not even the cane but you were possible so appealing. Tiffany Young: Well you know I’ve seen that John Mc Cain must now come out that was after Halloween. Ben Freedman: Right, and they’re just like mask. Tiffany Young: They’re full on masks. Ben Freedman: Anyway so a couple of weeks ago Apple came out with some new computers and whenever Apple comes out with something the world has to stop of course and we’re going to take a look at the new MacBook and the new MacBook Pro that came out a few weeks back in this segment and here is the new netbook which by the way looks a lot like the new MacBook Pro. Your MacBook you have the old, old white one. Tiffany Young: The old one from like five weeks ago. Ben Freedman: The old creamy white one in there and what do you think of the form factor with this new one? Tiffany Young: I mean I love the style and design is fantastic, tapered edges and the other — Ben Freedman: And the other — Tiffany Young: It looks smaller than me and I was trying to figure out why note standard. Ben Freedman: Tapered edges equals looks smaller. Tiffany Young: Yeah it doesn’t. Ben Freedman: It doesn’t is actually is pretty I mean it is like the — but it is actually almost the same dimensions as the other one. Let me open it up here they’re taking a lot of cues from the new Mac Books and that it’s now aluminum instead of plastic and it’s got the keyboard like from the MacBook air you know we’re just chicky keyboard. Tiffany Young: It has kind of like a masculine look doesn’t it. Ben Freedman: I think so yeah and I suppose to the old white ones that were a little bit feminine unique. Tiffany Young: Yeah there’s a little bit more feminine and this is for more masculine. Ben Freedman: And then they’ve got the drive here in the side and then they’ve got all the ports over here on the other side. Tiffany Young: But now FireWire just crazy. Ben Freedman: Yeah you hit on a big problem here, no FireWire on this. Tiffany Young: I have no idea why they would not put FireWire on this computer. First of all I mean my cameras, camcorders everything that I used nowadays is via FireWire so what happened. Ben Freedman: All you have to do is go out and buy all new everything as USB. This is my USB hard drive and USB camcorder and just forget about all the powers. Tiffany Young: Or can you custom this to switch out the hardware to add FireWire? Ben Freedman: Wouldn’t that be great but now you can. I think the reason they did that was because the Mac Pro has FireWire and they needed this looks a lot like a pro and that’s not a whole lot of difference now the Pro has graphics card this doesn’t have a graphics card but other than that so the Pro has FireWire. Tiffany Young: Yeah that so that’s disappointing FireWire just pointing and price that’s the other — I mean I love this design, I do, I do but $1200.00, $1300.00 for this — Ben Freedman: It is it starts at 1300 bucks and the old Mac book the light ones well like 1099. Tiffany Young: And so what happened there. Go take out the FireWire and raise the price. Ben Freedman: Take out the FireWire and raise the price but now it’s metal. Tiffany Young: Okay I guess you pay what $600.00 for the metal on that, the Apple emblem because I mean you can buy. Ben Freedman: That’s not $600.00, that’s $300.00 or 1099 to 1200, $200.00 more. Tiffany Young: What’s the PC a new PC same size, same equipment. Ben Freedman: Yeah like. Tiffany Young: What 600. Ben Freedman: Or like an entry level PC 600, 700 or 800 bucks. Tiffany Young: This is a 120 gig right so it still like start like about there. Ben Freedman: Yeah, yeah you get a decent PC laptop but then you’re running Windows, right. Tiffany Young: Yes that is true, you’re running Windows. Ben Freedman: You pay what they call the running windows. You pay what they call the Apple tax, right you pay the tax. They call this Apple tax and to make that beautiful Apple design and all that stuff you got to pay a little extra money. Tiffany Young: Okay so I can equate that to the designer jeans right. And you wear designer jeans got to cost and have a lot more. Ben Freedman: Something else they left off in here is and this is a real problem with me is there’s no in particular for this track pad there is no button. The whole track pad is now a button if you push here let me see if you can here this. Tiffany Young: That’s pretty need that no idea I do like that. Ben Freedman: You like that? Tiffany Young: Have you seen the advertisement, you know it’s a spicy you know so can do the two swipe the four swipe sort of that doing the well you have to relearn — Ben Freedman: Obviously hit the power button there. Tiffany Young: Which by the ways and pretty stuff looking. Ben Freedman: Yes right here in the corner. Yeah my problem is this my finger is like used to having a button there Tiffany Young: You just have to retrain yourself right? Ben Freedman: Just retrain yourself just buy a new a hard drive, just buy a new camcorder. Tiffany Young: Okay in FireWire you can get around but this you can I mean think about it keeping up the technology if this is a big hit we’re going to see a lot of computers that come with the same technology so you have to learn in many ways. Ben Freedman: The owner if that’s man women thing the women like the cress you light up the cress while I like that, I like to poke, here is the thing you go to the button there and I want to be at the poke that button with my finger where you like the crest and slide around and swipe. Tiffany Young: I think that looks and if you’ve seen the advertisement it does look prominent you know there is a thing and sort of. Ben Freedman: So you think the case is masculine that the touch pad is — Tiffany Young: Feminine yes. Ben Freedman: Right. Yin yang as they said. Tiffany Young: Yin yang so. Price in the FireWire those are my two biggest issues. Ben Freedman: I don’t like the fan that it has a no button on the track pad but other than that I think it’s pretty good I give it a four to five. Tiffany Young: So prices are big one for me so 3 out 5 for me just because I think the price should be somewhere for an entry level 899 maybe will more comfortable. Ben Freedman: 3 out of 5 for Tiffany, 4 out of 5 for me. That is 7 out of 10 for the new MacBook from Apple a good if expensive entry level laptop for the college student, rich college student in your life. Tiffany Young: That’s what our tuition dollars go. Ben Freedman: And we’ll be back in a second with the Mac Book Pro so please stay tuned. [Demonstration] Ben Freedman: And we’re back and in the second spot light section today we’re going to look at the second newly released computed, this is the Apple Mac Book pro and they’re really tried to unify the design here so if you take a look you know it’s very, very similar in style if I clean to bring the Mac Book by over here. Tiffany Young: And the difference. Ben Freedman: And you can see that difference between the two. Tiffany Young: Junior and Senior. Ben Freedman: It is just like mommy and puppy so there is the Mac Book in front of the Mac Pro. 13 inch and 15 inch, so depending on how big your screen the screen that you want there is good by the way something that I forgot to mention about the Mac Books that I also didn’t like and I know I think amount the dock the point, put that I want to talk about change on this guy is these feet this rubber feet. Tiffany Young: Yeah they’re not very — Ben Freedman: They’re not very sticky so when you put this down this still slides around quite a bit and I find that if I had this on my lap on a this lap desk things I find you like leave forward it slides up for as I’m typing it’s like slowly marches away from me. So what I’ve have to do is I went out to radio shop and I actually bought these extra little rubber feet. Tiffany Young: Huge difference. Ben Freedman: It is a huge difference it sits up now an extra couple of millimeters but now when try to move that, that does not go sliding until you pick it up and take it somewhere. Tiffany Young: That’s a great idea, extra feet. Ben Freedman: I live for your affirmations. That is a great idea. Tiffany Young: It’s a love language you’ve heard that. Ben Freedman: So here it is, we open it up. Tiffany Young: Now first of all pricing on this like the Mac mini one. Ben Freedman: Mac Book. Tiffany Young: 2000 bucks. Ben Freedman: 2000 bucks, starts at Tiffany Young: Right about not included in tax and all the rest of it which is really crazy. Ben Freedman: It is I mean for our, you can get a high. Tiffany Young: Why are you so expensive Mac, Apple why? Ben Freedman: It is pricey. You know why it’s not just in lone dude on the commercial he has to buy most expensive jeans. Those jeans don’t come free let me tell you. Tiffany Young: They don’t if you want to be hit you’ve got to pay for it I guess. Ben Freedman: That is true. Now, however, that is 2000 bucks, it comes with a FireWire port. Tiffany Young: Well you get the FireWire, however. Ben Freedman: So let’s flip it on the side here there is a FireWire port right there on the side amongst all the other ports, however. Tiffany Young: Well and you kind of get held to bid because you know all your other electronics that go in here very easy so we almost have it if you want the Mac you got to pay the extra. That’s you know if you have a FireWire or something you get the FireWire port on the side there. Ben Freedman: Now here’s another thing is that it used to have what we call the oh that whole that thing in is that loaded? Tiffany Young: We used to have the DVI port. Ben Freedman: The old one that was built-in. Tiffany Young: It’s not here anymore, it’s gone. Ben Freedman: That’s true they’ve got this tiny little thing called display link you see this tiny little port right here and you know how many monitors that fits, none. So what do you have to do you have to buy this thing, there might be some monitors, the monitors start using that but right now if you want to hook this up to a current display you got to spend extra for that two I think. Tiffany Young: 30 bucks. Ben Freedman: 30 bucks. Tiffany Young: For the new one. So what are you suppose to change that I mean that is still a frequent. Ben Freedman: Save room I guess maybe or they are trying to pack a lot of stuff and although this is actually I know it doesn’t seem like it it’s actually slightly larger than the old MacBook Pro and half a pound heavier. Tiffany Young: What happened there? Ben Freedman: I don’t know if you review they put more into it, the big difference between the MacBook and the MacBook Pro by the way the way they justify the price is obviously it’s a bigger screen but this also has a built-in graphics card whereas the MacBook doesn’t have any graphics card, so if you’re playing video games or doing anything with motion graphics it really helps to have the Mac Book Pro bigger screen and more graphics power as well. Tiffany Young: Two of the gigs right about there. Ben Freedman: Yeah where you can get it was a different hard drives in there and it comes with 2 megs of RAM standard or you can get with four, two gigs or four gigs of RAM so it does have higher specs but it’s got the same kind of keyboard in there as well. Tiffany Young: How about that shiny screen? Ben Freedman: How about and this is a problem so the old one used to come with a Mac screen or shiny screen now it’s all glass and let me show you if I pointed out one of our lights here it’s a mirror. Tiffany Young: Wow look at that. So what I think I think it’s a beautiful screen. Ben Freedman: But you know what. Tiffany Young: Like so finger printer. Ben Freedman: Yes but this is they were thinking of you thief because now you can put your make up on it while you were — Tiffany Young: Check my lipstick and push out my eyelashes I could see he is looking at me most importantly. Ben Freedman: Yeah looking the background so a few guidelines. Tiffany Young: Who’s checking me out? Ben Freedman: Does it feel heavy to you, it’s a little heavy. Yeah it’s a little heavy. It’s pro as one of this. Tiffany Young: It doesn’t move though. Ben Freedman: It doesn’t move because of the feet that I put on there so the Mac Book Pro now you got this aluminum case again no button but it does have a FireWire port but it doesn’t have the amount of screen that is only now the glossy screen on there. Tiffany Young: Two steps for a one steps back that’s the fully standard for technology I think. Ben Freedman: It think this is more of an upgrade than the MacBook, the MacBook I don’t mind the right one I like to light the cheaper price. So you know this one I don’t know I actually think this is pretty good I don’t like the fact there is a Mac screen but the gossiping looks great. Tiffany Young: It does look pretty. Ben Freedman: So I think they got it pretty much right with this, it is pricy as well I’m going to give it I need four to five again. Tiffany Young: Okay, well I many have to go with what I said last time which is price as the biggest obstacle here really so I would say $14.00- $15.00 would be anything. Ben Freedman: That’s what you would pay for and sort of a pro level windows laptop. Tiffany Young: It would make a big difference. Ben Freedman: You are paying the apple tax. Tiffany Young: Least if you have to buy accessories you’ve got them in your budget so. Ben Freedman: That’s true. You think that throw the stupid $30.00 on with. Tiffany Young: You would think so because one of this cost back for them. Ben Freedman: Well, I don’t know. Tiffany Young: 89 cents. Ben Freedman: That’s what the real name is in the dollars. Tiffany Young: Right all the accessories you have to buy. Ben Freedman: The money is in the dangles you know that. Tiffany Young: So 3 out of 5 for me. Ben Freedman: And 4 out of 5 for me that is 7 out of 10 again. So it is very consistent 7 out of 10 for the Mac Book, 7 out of 10 for the Mac Book Pro and for someone like me adds his view the Pro is by the way I want to go forth for someone like you who watches video the Mac Book is problem be. Tiffany Young: Who does not think who plays in her computer? Ben Freedman: The MacBook is probably the better choice for the $12.99 that’s all that we have for this week but please go to our website at Neo-Fight.TV and tell us what you think on this new Mac. Is it worth the upgrade? Tiffany Young: Is it worth the price? Ben Freedman: Do you have accessories that will not work in and you have no FireWire on the Mac Book, no questions. If you have an extra 30 seconds take a look at this. [Commercial]
