Are Cataracts Hereditary

Description

Are cataracts hereditary? Can genetics affect vision problems? Dr. Muriel Schornack, ophthalmologist at Mayo Clinic, answers in this video.

Transcript
Kurt: My name is Kurt from Maywood, New Jersey. My father had glaucoma, my grandfather had cataracts. Is this hereditary and how often should I check for these diseases? Dr. Muriel Schornack: Kurt, thanks for asking the question. Cataracts are normal age-related changes that most of us will experience if we live long enough. Glaucoma on the other hand, may be more likely in a patient with a family with the disease. A complete eye exam will allow you to assess your entire risk. Your eye-care provider will take a look at your eye pressure, will take a look at the appearance of your optic nerve, your age, corneal thickness, and will give you an idea of your total risk profile. The eye-care provider may also be able to determine an appropriate follow-up schedule for you.
