First of all, what would a pediatrician be looking for if you thought maybe some of the early signs of autism from the arms reach would be what we are looking for? Male 2: Well there are really three parts to diagnose autism in the modern age and one is they have serious reach to personal skills; the second is they have language impairments and the third is that they have repetitive behaviors. Male 1: But a four month old doesn’t talk, so what would you look at a four month old sort of like a little communication or something that’s a red flat in that concern? Male 2: Well a four month old may not be moving as well as another four month old and that doesn’t mean that it's going to be autistic but it might mean that it might have neurological problems. It maybe floppy, four months do make eye contact, they do have some social skills but not so much that it's hard to distinguish what’s abnormal and normal. Male 1: Would he smile and would be looking at the mothers face at four months? Male 2: Yes they do and they’ll leave a smile of others at four months but again this is not a quantitative kind of thing. Male 1: But these are kids who aren’t looking at their mother at all, weren’t smiling at the mother, weren’t looking at a smile back in four months, we would be very concerned. Male 2: Yes, you would be worried about that child. Male 1: And a kid who is about a year old and wasn’t doing any form of communication in other words, any expressive communication which is reaching out, trying to get you to do things that would be a big concern too? Male 2: Yes, that would be a red flag. Male 1: Either one of those two cases were there, would that be good to refer to a neurologist or an infant stimulation developmental program? Male 2: Sure, if there are any delays, those children should be referred to either those two.
