Why Do We See Increased Incidences Of Breast Cancer When We Study Women On Hormone Replacement Therapy/HRT? When we do a study where we compare women on estrogen with women who don’t go on estrogen, we report that the women who got estrogen got more breast cancer and the conclusion or the implication is that somehow estrogen caused that breast cancer. But there are no data to my knowledge and remember I am a molecular endocrinologist so I study how hormones work at the molecular level and there are no data anywhere I know of that indicate that estrogen has the ability to take a normal, healthy breast cell and change it to a cancer cell. That does not happen. So, how then can we explain the increased incidents of breast cancer in women on estrogen replacement therapy and the answer is, what we do know about estrogen is that it’s atrophic hormone which means it stimulates growth in some of the tissues in which it has receptors, like the breasts. So, if I took estrogen, my breasts would grow. In a woman who has an estrogen-sensitive breast cancer, estrogen may actually stimulate the rate of growth in the cancer itself, so during the time frame of the study, are you more likely to pick up a fast-growing cancer or a slow-growing cancer? What’s probably going on is there’s no more breast cancer in the estrogen group than there is in the control group but just more diagnosed breast cancer because the tumors are growing faster.

Breast Cancer - Advanced Types

Metastatic and locally advanced breast cancer are considered some basic breast cancer types. Metastatic type means that other parts of the body have been affected by the disease, such as the bone, brain, lung and liver. Locally advanced type is related to the local part of the breast and axilla, It means the cancer is large yet localized....

Breast Cancer - Estrogen Positive

ER-positive cancers are more probable to respond to anti-estrogen therapies. If you have an ER-positive cancer, you might respond well to tamoxifen, a drug that runs by blocking the estrogen receptors on the breast tissue cells and slowing their estrogen-fuelled development. A study advocates that Herceptin might be helpful regardless of your ER/PR status....

Breast Cancer and Genetics in Hispanic Women

Are you taking Tamoxifen or know somebody who does? Breast Cancer treatments like Tamoxifen may not be effective in women who posses a genetic variation in a gene called CYP2D6. The answer is in your genes! Genetic testing helps to uncover this truth and enable timely switching to alternative therapies before the breast cancer can recur....

Estrogens and Breast Cancer

For many years women were told that Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) offered as Estrogen Therapy (ET) or a combination of Estrogen and Progesterone (Hormone Therapy or HT) was the easy way to avoid any symptoms of the menopause. Women were given either natural or synthetic hormones to reduce hot flashes, headaches, moodiness, insomnia, and vaginal dryness....

Benefits and Hazards of Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT)

Two interesting studies involving hormone replacement therapy (HRT) were in my local paper today. One study linked HRT to an increase in asthma and the other study linked HRT to a decrease in colon cancer. The asthma/HRT study was published in a medical journal, Thorax, and followed the treatment of 57,000 French women who were of menopause age to determine their risk of developing asthma. None of the women had asthma at the start of the study. The study kept track of what kind of hormone treatment they were on whether it was hormonal contraceptives or HRT and tracked them over a period of 10 years....

Breast cancer, a female disease, is now becoming the second leading cause of cancer death worldwide after lung cancer.
