Bryan Batt Interview
Better.TV talks with Bryan Batt about his new book, his home life and where he loves to live.
Audra Lowe: Welcome back everybody, it’s time for hot topics and I'm joined by the talented Bryan Batt from AMC’s Mad Men. Good to have you stick around, thank you very much.
Bryan Batt: Great to be here.
Audra Lowe: There’s a lot of stuff to talk to you about, man. You could be here all hour, the whole hour.
Bryan Batt: Let’s do it.
Audra Lowe: Seriously? I can talk for a long, long time. First of all I want to talk to you about your book again which is called She Ain’t Heavy, She’s My Mother, which is dedicated to your mom.
Bryan Batt: Yeah.
Audra Lowe: You talk a lot about your partner Tom in the book and about your love for New Orleans.
Bryan Batt: Yes, well my hometown, I love it. I live there. We live there part time. We just got a house—
Audra Lowe: What is it about New Orleans?
Bryan Batt: Oh it’s magical. It’s not like any other city in this country. It’s very European that we have our own food, our own music, our own way of life. I just love it and I get to be closer to my family. I can be in New York and I can be in L.A. but right now, especially now I want to be near my family.
Audra Lowe: Your family?
Bryan Batt: Yeah.
Audra Lowe: And so what’s the biggest difference between all three of those cities in terms of, you know, being in New York, being in L.A., being in New Orleans, I know you prefer New Orleans.
Bryan Batt: Well I prefer them all. It’s really—it’s hard, it’s hard. I love New York because I love the fast pace and I love all the theater and all the great culture that’s here. I love L.A. because that’s where all the TV and the film—
Audra Lowe: Right.
Bryan Batt: But I do love New Orleans because it’s just a slower, easier, a good time place.
Audra Lowe: Plus the food alone would keep me there.
Bryan Batt: Oh it’s amazing.
Audra Lowe: The food is great.
Bryan Batt: It’s amazing.
Audra Lowe: Now when it comes to your mother, did she have any southern traditions that still stay with you today as far as you guys growing up, be even as adults, anything that sticks with you?
Bryan Batt: Traditions, yes there are so many, I mean because we’re so—we’re so steep in tradition down there but one—I mean I just learned so much from her. One thing I learned not to do and she will not do, she will not gossip. She will not say—intentionally say something bad about someone or spread something negative.
Audra Lowe: Yeah.
Bryan Batt: Some of her friends are even—
Audra Lowe: She’s staying away from that all, right?
Bryan Batt: I will not do that. That is just not nice.
Audra Lowe: Oh I love mom.
Bryan Batt: Yeah.
Audra Lowe: You have a store in New Orleans also.
Bryan Batt: Yeah it’s called Hazelnut which is named after my grandmother who is mentioned in the book, her name was Hazel and she was a nut.
Her maiden name was Nuss and in German that means nut. So my great grandparents have a send of humor but it’s home furnishings and interiors and—
Audra Lowe: It’s been featured in a lot of magazines too.
Bryan Batt: A lot of magazines, yeah, yeah.
Audra Lowe: So how did you decide to do something like that, I mean did you have the business background to start that?
Bryan Batt: I didn’t, my partner had the business background and I just had what I think is good taste.
Audra Lowe: This always helps.
Bryan Batt: But yeah it’s fun that people come in the shop to see if I'm really there and yes I'm not filming or I'm not here in New York doing the show or promoting the book. I'm there wrapping packages, sweeping the floor, I’m receiving and they're just kind of astonished.
Audra Lowe: Surprised.
Bryan Batt: Yes. I was like, but no it’s fun.
Audra Lowe: Yeah.
Bryan Batt: You know I like doing different things. I believe that life is an end proposition, not an or proposition.
Audra Lowe: I'm thinking yes, a lot of buzz so whatever you're doing, you're doing a good job at it too. Now, what do you have coming up, because I heard somebody saying about a tour to come out?
Bryan Batt: Yeah well I'm doing the book tour right now. I'm going to be in New Orleans and L.A. and then I think Atlanta, maybe Houston, I'm not sure. They want to call Random House and say—
Audra Lowe: You’ll be there right?
Bryan Batt: And then I’m working on another book called mad for design. It’s a design book and that’s what I'm doing too. There’s other irons in the fire. Theatrically I'm in the fall, I'm doing the short Feinsteins, my one man show, Batt on the Hot Tin Roof.
Audra Lowe: I don’t know how you do all of this. You're getting some sleep hopefully.
Bryan Batt: I'm trying, I'm trying. There’s going to be a couple of days in Florida. I'm going to just go lay on the beach.
Audra Lowe: And just relax.
Bryan Batt: I’ll try to relax but it’s hard.
Audra Lowe: Yeah I know, I know. But you know what, it’s a good thing when you're going, going, going so when you stop then there’s something up, something’s up.
Bryan Batt: Yeah, recharge.
Audra Lowe: All right. Well so good to have you here, congratulations on everything to you Bryan.
Bryan Batt: Thank you and congratulations to you.
Audra Lowe: Thank you darling. We’ll be down there to visit you in New Orleans to eat.
Bryan Batt: Please do, yes.
Audra Lowe: Please stay with us, we’ll be back after this.
