Chicken and Poultry Safety Tips Hi, I'm Cynthia Sass, Preventions Nutrition Director. Did you know that just in the United States alone there are over 75 million cases of food poisoning, sending 325,000 people to the hospital every year? So food safety is very important and it all starts at the supermarket. Chicken is a very helpful food but all raw chicken carries bacteria. So here are a few quick food safety tips. Number one put the chicken in your cart last. That way it won’t travel around the store with you at room temperature where it can grow bacteria that you can't see, smell or taste. When you get at home, put it in the refrigerator right away. Make sure your fridge temperature is 40 degrees or less. When you're preparing the chicken, make sure to use a separate cutting board and use it within a couple days of shopping, I'm Cynthia Sass, Preventions’ Grocery Guru.
