China Blocks Social Networking Sites Mark Licea: We have a wrap of news from Nintendo and Sony out of E3. There is a set date for the arrival of Windows 7 and no social networking in China. It’s Wednesday, June 3rd. I’m Mark Licea and it’s time to get loaded. The major E3 Press Conference has wrapped up yesterday so let’s sum up. Nintendo unveiled a few new games including a new 2D Supermario Bros. game for the Wii that supports up to four players. Another game worth mentioning is Supermario Galaxy 2 which looks similar to the first with a few cool new features. We also got to see Yoshi in action. We mentioned earlier in the week that Nintendo was preparing to launch Wii Fit Plus which was confirmed. An interesting announcement was Nintedo’s Wii vitality sensor that can read your pulse although it’s unclear exactly how the sensor will be implemented. Meanwhile, Sony’s PSP Go was leaked early but the company also unveiled a new motion controller similar to Nintendo’s Wiimote that pairs with the existing Playstation I. It should be out next spring. The company also showed a bit more of their upcoming God of War III game. You can read more out of E3 at e3.cnet.com. China has begun to block access to Twitter, Flickr and many other popular social networking sites. The move is in preparation for the anniversary of the Tiananmen Square Incident in 1989. Government forces ended a democratic protest which lead to the deaths of an unknown number of protesters. It’s thought that the government has shut down access to sites like Twitter to prevent citizens from organizing protest or voicing this in. Most analysts believe that access will be restored after the 20-year anniversary. If you’re the type to tweet your every move, the cellphone maker INQ plans to introduce a Twitter phone for the holiday. The phone would cost around $140.00 but we’re not entirely sure if it would integrate other social networking functions. If not, do we really need an entire phone dedicated for use just on Twitter? You can already do that from any phone. In more social networking news, the US Military in Afghanistan is making an effort to post news, videos and pictures through Facebook, Twitter and YouTube. The military is using Twitter to post brief messages and reports on their troops. The military’s effort to Twitter is aimed at generating an unfiltered view of the war from the troops themselves. The Facebook page has already gathered close to 5,000 followers. In the midst of the Palm Prix and the next gen iPhone launch, Nokia has reminded everyone that there is still a player in the smart phone market. They’ve released the Nokia N97 for the low, low price of 550 Euros or $785 without a contract. Like it’s brethren, the phone is touch screen. It comes with a physical keyboard, GPS, 32GB of storage and the live social networking on the home screen. In addition, Nokia launched their app store OVI last week. Microsoft has confirmed that Windows 7 will hit store shelves on October 22nd. The company wants to wrap up development on the OS by the middle of next month. Microsoft has also confirmed that it will be offering some sort of guarantee that if you buy this, the machine, close to the Windows 7 launch date, you will receive a free or discounted upgrade to the new OS. In more Microsoft news, the company plans to disable DAV access to Hotmail through external clients. That means that users of the popular Outlook Express will have to switch over to Windows Live Mail. Users will be able to access Hotmail through Pop3 but Microsoft wants to switch DAV access over to Delta Synch which handles large inboxes more efficiently than before. The deadline is set to happen on September 1st. Those are all your headlines for today but I will be back tomorrow with more. Thank you for watching. I’m Mark Licea with CNET TV and you’ve just been loaded.
