Closet Organization Tips

If you are missing a sock, shirt, or pants in your closet, trying to find them can be an absolute nightmare. Better spoke with an organizational expert, and she offered a wealth of tips about how to get rid of that closet clutter.

Audra: If you’re missing a shirt or pants in your closet and you’re trying to find them it can be a absolute nightmare, we’ll Rhiannon spoke with organization expert Rosemary and has major tips to get rid of your closet clutter in today’s ‘Getting Organized.’ Rhiannon: Look familiar? It’s hard to stay organized with all this stuff but we’re going to get you together fall, right now we’re here with our organizing guru Rosemary, and Stacey. We’re going to get Stacey’s closet together today, a bit of a mess—yeah? Let’s get started. Rosemary: Stacey, the first thing you’re going to do is get rid of all your empty hangers and just fling them for now because they take up a lot of room. And now we want to replace these wire hangers with plastics. Now what I want to do is I typically will put sleeveless things in the front and then I’ll go down and I’ll do short sleeves, and then I’ll do long sleeves. Off season clothes, I would typically if you have the space have them on a separate bar, try to have all the clothes there at the same season in one place, okay? Organizing is all about categorizing. Stacey: I would like to have my jewelry accessible, but do you have any suggestion as how I can do a better job? Rosemary: Yeah, this mishmash, you can never find what you need and you’re going to lose little things like earrings. But you know, you always want to fit the item through the container little things like earrings are perfect in the container this size, so I’m gathering them all up. So far we seem to have pairs too. This cube doesn’t look bad, this is pretty. This one, I don’t know, it looks like you’ve got pants in tops. It’s a little bit of everything in here—tell me about this. Stacey: Yeah, I just probably threw that recently. Rosemary: How old are these things? Stacey: This one I wear pretty often. Rosemary: Okay. Stacey: I just didn’t get any chance to put it on a hanger. Rosemary: Rule of thumb, if you haven’t worn something in a year, let it go. It’s all about categorizing, will have one cube that’s for bottoms and we’ll have one that’s for tops, okay? Rhiannon: Hi ladies, how is it going? Rosemary: We’ve made some progress. We did some hangers and we organized her jewelry and now we’re working on these cubes. Rhiannon: Okay, things are perfect but organization isn’t perfect according to Rosemary. Rosemary: That’s true. That’s not the goal, is to be perfect. And to really do a closet, you need probably three or four hours. Rhiannon: Not an hour that we’ve had? Rosemary: Right. So we’ve got to keep going, we’ve got more work to do. Rhiannon: We have more work to do. How were you feeling so far? Stacey: Good, it’s getting better. Baby steps.
