Conscious Clothing: Old Jeans into Overalls
This time on Thread Heads were hangin out with Stephanie from the Conscious Clothing Store Ragtrade. Were also taking on a viewer challenge and showing you how to make a pair of overalls from some old jeans.
Female: Hey there welcome to Thread Heads!
Male: this week we are hanging out with conscious clothing kind of sewers, Stephanie Spiegel from rag trade happy clothing company.
Female: She is only 23 and has an amazing store where she specializes and recycled and locally designed clothing.
Male: So take it away Stephanie.
Stephanie: Organic clothing is made from organic cotton, some things you really got to think about when you are buying clothing is how the actual plant is grown. Are they putting tons of chemicals on it or is it organically grown? Do you know what kind of chemicals you are wearing today? Basically everything in here, the clothing, it changes. It is really recycling when you look at it, you are recycling your old clothing that you do not want but maybe someone else wants, it is just you know one persons trash is kind of ones treasure.
Alright first thing of your routine, in the boutique section it is basically all local designers and you know when I started I really did not have that much but it is like if you built it and they will come. In the mall those clothes are imported probably from China or India you know you look at the tags you get to think of all the fuel to use to get you know the crate on to the boat to get the boat out of the port, over across the seas and then put it on a train or a truck to get finally to the store. It is really a lot you should consider things like that when you are buying clothing.
You do events, we do some gorilla gardening also called environmental graffiti and basically that is going out and finding unused publics space and gardening it at night with bunch of friends, so that will be fun.
Male: Well Stephanie, you definitely spire us to do some of our own gardening and to tie it all together we answer this for our questions.
Female: I am a horticulture student and do a lot of gardening; do you have any ideas on how to transform old jeans to overalls?
Male: You bet we do, one old jeans in a new overall lesson coming up.
Stephanie: Okay get out two old pairs of jeans and starting with the bigger pair use the seam ripper to remove the bottom part of each belt lope. Then remove the entire top part of the jeans and put it aside till later. Now rip the seams out of both sides of the jeans, take out the second pair and using the length of the first pair as a guide line cut both legs out of the front of the jeans.
Pin those pieces on to each side of the first pair and when you are done they will look like this.
Now saw along your pin lines, take the second pair and cut the remaining parts of the legs off. Now cut down to each side and down the middle so that the front and back are two separate pieces. Take the front piece and pin it to the back part of the first pair, fold in the sides and pin, now take the butt piece and rip the crotch team up a little so it lays flat, then pin it to the front part of the first pair fold in the sides to make sort of a triangle shape, pin in place and saw along all the pin lines you just created.
Male: When we return we are going to finish the overall lesson and spot light some cool conscious clothing designers.
Female: Stay tuned.
Stephanie: Alright now that you got all your pieces sawed together, take out one of those left over leg pieces and cut it into an equal rectangle. Fold it in half and cut down the crease, pin both strips to opposite sides of the back of your overalls, after you try them on connect the other end of each strip to a separate belt lope in front by making slit in the strip and tying it on like so.
Now take another left over piece cut two strips out of it and gather the sides of the overalls; then poke a hole through all layers of fabric on each side and thread a strip trough. And you are done. You can even take your left over pieces and make an awesome utility belt.
Male: We got tons of awesome submissions this week like Andy Mandy who made this cool stencil on a laser cutter on his work and spray painted it on to a Teammate, No-nee, sent in this rebond white Teammate that she did at a sheer boredom and T shirt killer made this sweet one sleeved off the shoulder number. Then there is Mudvaynne 17 that just found this site the other day and has already made 2 bikinis and a pair of board shorts.
Female: One of the most incredible recycle clothing designers we have seen is Anastasia Lewis of badunklesista. She is a San Francisco based artist who uses ugly shape fabric to construct amazing one of kind pieces that are comfortable to wear. But if it is a unique jewelry you are looking for you should definitely visit emic-oosaikrewearstyle.com. He make incredible jewelry out of old toys and game board pieces. If you are in to making your own garbage captor, you should definitely join the trash and street team in your area and if you are lucky enough to be in Brooklyn on July 27, you should attend the trash and street team trunk show.
Male: Remember keep on sending in your stuff and hitting up the forms after all it is your thread banger.
Female: We leave you now with the musical styling of the wheelers check the blog for the complete video. Until next week were out of here.
