Mari: Hi! I am Mari from Brooklyn, New York and my question is, what is the difference a copper IUD and a plastic IUD, and which one should I use? Dr. Susann Clifford: That's a great question Marie. We've been using IUDs, much more over the last several years. There are two types: The paragard or the copper releasing IUD, it lasts for 10 years, which is its major advantage. It does release small amounts of copper and its major downfall is that cycles can become more heavy and more crampy while the IUD is in place. The Mirena IUD, which is the plastic IUD releases progesterone. It can only be used for five years at a time, but its major advantage is that cycle is become very, very light and in fact for many women, cycles go away completely while the Mirena IUD is in place. So, it's really a question of choice, but we tend to use more of the Mirena or plastic IUD.
