Cupcakes in Beverly Hills Audra Lowe: Beverly Hills is known for its expensive cars, movie stars and now, for cupcakes. Rhiannon shows us three decadent shops that are fueling a celebrity cupcake craze. Rhiannon: From Chanel to Dolce and Gabbana, stars aren’t just hitting Rodeo Drive for the fancy clothes and daring stilettos. Like the rest of us, Hollywood has a sweet tooth and this is what they’re after. Rodeo Drive is a playground for the rich and famous. Within blocks are three gourmet bakeries that have people calling Beverly Hills, “The Celebrity Cupcake Capital of the World.” Desiree Adl-Revivo: The Kardashian’s been a fan of Famous Cupcakes since I first opened and I was always amazed that wow! All these celebrities and even from Kim and Khloe and Kourtney, they love my cupcakes when there are so many options to choose from but they would make it a point to drive all the way to my little shop. Rhiannon: Made popular with the help of the Kardashian’s, other celebrities can’t help but think of these decadent treats at Famous Cupcakes. Desiree Adl-Revivo: We have like Vanessa Hudgens buying cupcakes for Zac Efron. This is one of his favorite cupcakes. Rhiannon: Crumbs bakery is popular on both coast but in California, you may run into the fence of Jessica Alba or Avril Lavigne getting their frosting fix. And despite Hollywood’s obsession with keeping thin, waiting in line is the norm at nearby Sprinkles Cupcakes. Candace Nelson: Within the first few months, we had our first major celebrity talk about us on camera, on TV and that’s with Katie Holmes. At that time, she was dating Tom Cruise and it was sort of media frenzy and the media would follow her around with a box of Sprinkles Cupcakes because she had declared them her favorite. So, that was definitely a huge boon to our business. Not long after that, Barbra Streisand sent a box of our cupcakes to Oprah Winfrey and Oprah Winfrey called us to have the cupcakes on her show and sort of the rest is history. Rhiannon: Five years later, owner Candace still gets her hands dirty. Candace Nelson: Well, our cupcakes are made with the very best ingredients. We source the best Belgian chocolate, the best Belgian cocoa, the world’s best vanilla and our grating carrots, we’re mashing bananas. We’re using just wonderful pure, wholesome ingredients, baking with care. Rhiannon: As a judge on the upcoming Food Network show, “Cupcake Wars” Candace says, the competition is fierce. Candace Nelson: It seems that a lot of these people that said this is a trend that would die quickly, fortunately, have not turned out to be right. Rhiannon: But there are no cupcake claws coming out among the three Beverly Hills shops. Candace Nelson: Everybody wants to make it a fight but really, it’s about following what you love, I mean I got into this business because I love to bake. Rhiannon: The owner of Famous Cupcake says, “There are enough cupcake cravings for all three.” She says keeping her ingredients organic is how she stands apart. Desiree Adl-Revivo: For me, it was creating that perfect cupcake and also, making it healthy where you don’t feel so guilty eating one. Rhiannon: So, I checked my guilt at the door and decided to try all three. At Sprinkles, I tasted the strawberry cupcake. At Famous Cupcakes, I tried the bow tie which is similar to devil’s food cake and last, at Crumbs bakery, I sampled the peanut butter cup cupcake. All three were rich and delicious. I couldn’t choose a favorite but luckily, for those of us who don’t live in Beverly Hills, you can buy Famous and Sprinkles mix and make them at home. But I had to ask the secret to making the perfect cupcake. Desiree Adl-Revivo: My one secret and that’s what everyone asks me is “How do you bake that perfect cupcake?” And to me, it has to be perfect balance of cake and frosting. Candace Nelson: The key to baking at home, I would say is not over mixing and not over baking. Start looking at your cupcakes at the minimum end of the baking time and when it’s just not wet on top; it’s time to pull it. Rhiannon: And if your baking skills are some par like mine, Crumbs bakery will ship cupcakes straight to your door, so you can get your sugar high and avoid the paparazzi. For Better, I’m Rhiannon.
