Dealing with the Chaos in Liberia
Female 1: Liberia has endured years of destruction characterized by
marauding gangs of youths, mercenaries and chaos. Violence roke
Africa’s oldest republic in the late 1980s when economic collapse
ended in civil war. Dissidence were Charles Taylor’s national
patriotic front over around the country and executive descend
President Samuel Doe.
Charles Taylor himself is elective President in 1997 but the
violence continued. The crisis came to ahead in July 2003.
Thousands fled to the capitol of Monrovia to escape gangs in the
countryside but even the city wasn’t safe. Hundreds of massive
people in the streets caught in the crossfire between rebel forces
and government troops.
Ordinary Liberians beg the International Community to help in the
causes of war over one in a half million Liberians were forced
from their homes operated in this place. Some fled abort, others
caught between the warning factions, lost their property, their
homes, their families, and even their lives.
Female 2: We became afraid, so when we heard the gun sounds, we thought
people were coming. So we took or luggage and begin to run. And
running sometime, a stray bullet would hit someone and because of
the gunshot the person may die. You didn’t get the chance to even
look around for your daughter or son. You just have to continue
moving just for you to hope for your survival.
Female 1: So please of ordinary Liberians were finally on save in August
2003. When troops from the International Community arrived to
outs Charles Taylor. In October, a massive UN Peace Keeping
Mission was in place and a peace accord signed establishing a
transitional government to drawn from the warning factions. Many
had never held office before.
Wesley Johnson: We have a difficult govern to run, it govern of an inclusion
provided a well of government we are trying to do our best. And
one of gotten our risk is this has happened to be that all Liberians
afraid of the war and so we have to put our heart to this nonsense.
Jacques Klein: The International Community should be ashamed of their thought
that for 24 years, they stood why rather there is a murder. May-
Ann raped and kills her and they did nothing. It was only once the
whole of the West Catholic and regions here may only give me a
pretty war it began to fall apart. That someone funny said look
Liberia is the problem, Charles Taylor is the problem in Liberia.
We need to do something and we need to do something now.
We have a country here about 3.3 million people. We come into
this to be destroyed but that there is no electric concrete, telephone
systems, street and residence postal service and Monrovia still a
city of Monrovian people about water or electricity.
Female 1: Today Liberia is a country holding its breath. In December 2003,
the first attempt to disarmed and demobilize, warning factions was
overwhelmed by the huge numbers combatants one thing to hand
in no weapons.
A second attempt is now well under way. Over 14,000 UN troops
from 49 countries have been deployed to demobilize up to 45,000
combatants. It's a concerted effort to encourage all the pieces to
finally hand in no weapons.
Female 3: Disarm to this we all knew and live of better life
Male 1: This message is brought to you by the Republic Information of
Section of the United Nations Mission in Liberia.
Female 1: Today on mill the United Nations Peace Keeping Mission in
Liberia is the largest peace keeping mission in the world.
Jacques Klein: Without the elongations and no authorization there is no stability,
there is no safety and security inwirement. There is no record could
you return, there is no displace person returned and all through
new process come to a stall.
Female 1: Disarmament is taking place in the countryside where most of the
former combatants still live. Large group rowing the country roads,
walking for hours to hand in no weapons and goes through the
process of demobilization. These men have been fighting in the
bush for years. Tension remains high.
Every morning the military pick up points of crowded with men
and women waiting to be taken through the process of
demilitarization with so many people corps up in the fighting. It's
hard to know just how many combatants they really were and how
many need to be disarmed.
Rebel leaders are cooperating with the UN forces to verify their
fighters. Baby Face is a former rebel command. The United
Nations Forces face a tough challenge gotten through the power
military commands structures in maintaining calm. Once they
handed in their weapons, they need to find new way to occupy
themselves in animal living. A fact that magnet another rebel
understands only too well.
Baby Face: We need to talk about the next plan after handing in our arms. It's a
meeting to help everyone. Fighting men, there are so many of us.
We need education, trade, and dental, medical, whatever.
