Male Speaker: Diagnosing ADHD. Mary Beth Decey: It is diagnosed through observations of the person and family history, individual histories. No matter what age you diagnose some one, actually you look back at what life has always been like for them. And you talk to other family members if possible, you know, other coworkers or people that know them very well. You do rating scales on that of the person would do on themselves and other significant others or in the case of children, teachers and sometimes coworkers would fill out on them. Sometimes depending on what, how the testing is going, there is some computer tests that are done that show people sense of vigilance or lack of vigilance and those are the basic way that it is diagnosed. Male Speaker: Mary Beth Decey is the Executive Director of life management center. She diagnoses and works with patients with ADHD, a disease that must be diagnosed by qualified specialists, Psychiatrists, Psychologists, Pediatricians, Neurologists and clinical social workers. Once diagnosed, many people ask the same questions, why has this happened? Did I do something to cause this? Mary Beth Decey: The probably, the most common cause of it is that, it is familial. It tends to run in families. There are other causes of it, but they are statistically much less significant than the familial link. Some of the other causes of it are severe head injury or stroke, very high fevers may be in a child, traumatic birth, maternal smoking. Health professionals differ in their experiences in diagnosing and determining the Causes of ADHD. When you select a specialist, it is important to find some one with Specific training in ADHD. For icyou.com I am Jack Rittenhouse.
