Diagnosing Constipation in Children Dr. Travis Stork: We sent Rachel and her daughter, Hope to pediatric gastroenterologist Dr. Susan Edelstein to find out her options. Rachel: Hi. Dr. Susan Edelstein: Hi, I’m Dr. Edelstein nice to meet you. Well what’s been going on? Why are you here today? Rachel: She is continually constipated. Dr. Susan Edelstein: Have you ever seen any blood on her stool? Rachel: Sometimes. It’s rare but I have. Dr. Susan Edelstein: What is a typical day for her diet wise? Rachel: Her favorite cereals, Cocoa Puffs. Dr. Susan Edelstein: I think that’s okay. Did she usually have a snack in the morning? Rachel: Yeah, she likes fruit snacks, her Nutri-Grain Bars. Dr. Susan Edelstein: So why don’t you come on up here Hope. Come up here. I think we need to check her diet, bananas and apples are very constipating. The grain bars, that are kind of snack bars I would actually cut back on. Children don’t do as well with fiber in general. It’s counter intuitive to what it’s promoted to adults in terms of keeping it regular but in children, it doesn’t work as well. Rachel: Okay, thank you. Dr. Susan Edelstein: Nice to meet you. Bye Hope, it was nice to meet you too.
