George: Our time to visit the phenomenal ruins is getting closer. Lisa and I are taking the train to Peru’s most famous destination. I think we’re used to the high elevation now, aren’t we? Lisa: Yes, I think so. George: So what we’ve done now is we’ve come from Kuzco to Aguas Calientes on the train. There are three types of train service, you could have the inexpensive to the expensive. When you get to Aguas Calientes, the way to get to Machu Pichu is by bus. Or— Lisa: Or you can go by foot. The Inca trail is about a four day hike that takes you right to the top. George: We like this way better. Aguas Calientes is a neat and tidy town at the base of the mountain where Machu Pichu sits. It is known for its water, hot springs and cold running rivers. There’s a compact town square with another statue of Pachacutec in his imperious glory. There are several shops, hotels and restaurants along the towns few steep streets and this is the town where you buy two important tickets. First the bus tickets to Machu Pichu. The bus company takes US dollars only. You also buy Machu Pichu tickets at the cultural center in the town square. You can pay for them either in Peruvian soles or US dollars. Bring plenty of cash with you for both tickets because there’s not a bank or an ATM machine anywhere in Aguas Calientes.
