Discover Croatias Hvar Island
The capital of Hvar is the city of the same name with 3500 inhabitants situated in a wide bay to the Western peak of the island. Almost every house is a monument here and each has its own story. The renaissance summer lodge of Hanibal Lucića a Croatian dramatist can also be found here. He wrote the first drama in Croatian language Robinja, the slave girl.
From the writers estate monastic quarters were built for the nuns of the Benedictine order a wondering nun one’s brought lease here from the Canary Islands made of Agave fiber. Croatian nuns have been making such artistic laces since then. The Gulf of War with its outstanding insolents was used by the Venetian fleet for the three centuries to store Armanda for the winter.
The structure of the town also reflects a Venetian effect and with furic sections Hvar has kept its medieval face and traditions. The settlement was established by Greek colonizers in 358 BC but finds with the nearby caves proved humans already lived here in the Stone Age. The Greeks were followed by Illyrians and Romans.
Grad recognized the rain event as against Vrboska in the 15th century. Arch Venitian style houses determining the townscape were built here. The most known house is that of Petar Hektorović the Croatian poet deriving from a Patrician family for whom a statue is erected for the 400th anniversary of his birth.
Three fortresses stand on the hills above the city. They provide an excellent view over the port and the best beach of Hvar, the Von, the stone cabins of which were built in the more peaceful times between the two World Wars. The center of the city is the Monratch, the port, here stands Loggia, in other words the city hall and the clock tower next to it, the remains of the ancient Earl’s palace.
The 4500 square meter Pjaca is the largest square in Croatia. This Stjepan in Cathedral and the Bishop’s Palace are located here. The church closing down the Eastern side of the square was build above the ruins of the 15th century sanctuary. A small medieval well stands in front of the Cathedral which was built in 1520 and renovated in the recent past.
The first Croatian town theater stands near the well which is the oldest county theater in Europe and was established on the initiation of Prince Pedro Semitecola. It attained its present exterior at the time of its’ renovation in 1880. The Arsenal is located on the first floor of its building and it’s the most monumental recollection of the island circular architecture.
The building of the City Hall derives from 1479. We can find the building of the Palace Hotel next to it that was built in 1903 on the side of the connective door palace which at one time also included a clock tower. The French erected a small fortress on the key where today an open air stage is located. The fast development of far began in 1278 when according to the decision of the City Council a new bishop break and circular seeds started to be built for the island.
Up to that time the capital called far had been called study grad meaning old town. T he following is written by a tourist who tried his hand and sailing the Adriatic for the first time. It happened on the first morning, I woke up on the boat step out of the cabin, walked to the deck, the sea glimpsed in my eyes. I breed the fresh salty fragrance of the air. I watched the goals playing above, peace and calmness possessed me. The sun illuminated the brig, and the water delicately nestled up to the wooden body of the boat. The other passengers of the boat soon woke up and the smell of fine coffee indicated that breakfast would also be ready within a few minutes.
The experience of the sea and sailing is timeless, charming everybody regardless of age, gender or occupation it uproots the monotony of weekdays and grants its experience which bring us through a foggy cold winter days. Numerous wooden bodies that two or three master sailboats were re-built from old fishing boats serve tourists boats on the Adriatic.
Through the equipped with every comfort they’ve retained their atmosphere. Two or three bedroom cabins with their own bathroom are at the disposal of guests on these boats for 16 to 38 people. The captain and his two to three person staff ‘take care of comfort, safety and meals.
