Japan, we often forget is an archipelago, a collection of four main islands surrounded by 3,000 other smaller. Miyajima Island just off the coast of west Honshu near Hiroshima is a very popular resort getaway in the 20th century, but in the centuries past, only religious men of the highest statute were allowed here. Miyajima and its surrounding waters are world famous for oysters with millions cultivated in a variety of agriculture stuff.
On Miyajima barbequed on raw oysters are one of the local delicacies not to be missed. Each morning ferries begin depositing thousands of tourists on the island the day trip plus there are numerous — and resorts for overnight stays. Island visitors can wander the streets and find just about any sort of diversion that may interest them. There world’s largest rice scoop is the centerpiece of downtown.
Shops have been selling every tourist trinket under the sun. Miyajima has a large population of small deer that wander the streets, entertaining visitors old and young. They’ve been on the island for about 6,000 years. Their numbers diminished significantly during the war but have free bounded since. In addition to the many oyster restaurants, Okonomiyaki is like the second in popularity.
Miyajima is most famous for it’s Momochis which are being made in small factories all along the street filled in baked waffle dough with the variety of fillings. Mount Misen is the highest peak on the island that about 1,700 feet. It is surrounded by lush forest and small mountain streams. always a source of entertainment for youngsters. The surrounding forest is part of island’s national park, which can be reach by number of different hiking path or for many there’s a system of two rope ways that will take you nearly to the top. With some luck there’s a small band of monkeys that some times make an appearance as part of the mountain top entertainment. Here too breathtaking views and on this particular day, a Japanese submarine making maneuvers in one of the islands straits.
The Senshu-kuko and five storey pagoda are significant landmarks here built in 1407. The pagoda reaches about 90 feet into the sky and elaborately decorated whereas the Senshu-kuko was never completed and looks a little dull next to its called the neighbor. The island’s most significant historic sight is that Itsukushima-jinja Shrine built in the late 7th century. It was remodel again in the late 12th century. The monastery continues to be religiously significant in daily Miyajima life, though they do charge a nominal entrance fee to help with maintenance. The monastery’s floating Otori gate is the world famous though not really floating its set in each on the foundation and not pilings driven into the ground. The gate is in magnificent sight and changes by yellow with the sun.
