Dr. Andrew Pilon from the Sierra Eye and Laser Institute demonstrates EyeSite, a self-service video screening kiosk. “It tests your distance and near vision, and it’s highly reliable,” Dr. Pilon says. “But it doesn’t replace an examination by a doctor.”

Eye Self Service Exam Device Dr. Travis Stork: And we have something really cool here that helps assess your vision. It’s called the eye sight vision kiosk. Please welcome Laura and Dr. Pilon, thanks for being here. Dr. Andrew Pilon: Thanks a lot Travis. Laura: Thank you. Dr. Travis Stork: So a pretty cool little device here and also I can’t argue, it says free. Dr. Andrew Pilon: You should never argue with that. Well, this is actually an automated visual screen that starts to pop-up in the country. It’s a great test to do. It takes about three minutes to assess your distance and your vision. It’s highly reliable, and again free how can you beat that? But it doesn’t replace an examination by comprehensive, by doctors. Dr. Travis Stork: So Laura would come up to this machine which is in grocery stores and places where there is a lot of food traffic, and she would sit down and basically it’s a self description how to do it right, it talks to you. Dr. Andrew Pilon: It’s completely automated, totally interactive multilingual. It’s just a touch screen. She follows a prompt on the screen. Dr. Travis Stork: Looks to that little eyepiece there, is that right? Dr. Andrew Pilon: This is for the distance portion of the exam. The near portion of the exam is actually on the particular screen. And the great thing too is after she completes the sequence, there’s a series of question she can answer and that in turn and get more information about her eyes and not only that, the greatest piece of information that this particular machine does is actually coordinates you with an eye care provider. So it identifies if there’s a problem and tells you, you should follow up with an eye care provider. Dr. Travis Stork: And there are currently in Atlanta, St. Louise, and Houston expanding across the country, so you can look for one and I hope you’ll find a location for you right?
