Hi I’m Gene Wang Fantasy Football writer for the Washington Post in
washingtonpost.com. Welcome to my video on how to play fantasy football. In this
segment, I’m going to talk about the different types of family football leagues in which
you can participate. Now there are three main types of fantasy football leagues. The first
is the annual draft league, the second is the keeper league, and the third is auction league
and we first start with the annual draft league. This is the most common type of league
used around the country by most fantasy football enthusiasts.
Now in this type of league you have a different team every year, the draft each year is
based on who wins if the winner of that league is going to be drafting last it’s going to be
in reverse order so for example if you have a 12-team league, the team that was last in the
league before is going to be drafting first and then the team that was second last is
drafting second and so on and so forth. And as I said this is the most common type league
and it’s the league I found is the most fun because you can have new players each year
and you have to prepare a lot of the draft and to me one of the best parts of my fans
football is preparing for the draft.
Now there are keeper leagues where you can keep one or two players or have many
players your league determines is fair. So if you’re in a keeper league and you’ve drafted
say Adrian Peterson who was you know the Rookie of the Year last year. He’s going to
be setting your roster for as long as your part of this particular fantasy league and that’s a
good feeling to add about playing you know it’s going to be there. Every year you’re
going to have a top running back. You know a character about drafting a top running
back but at the same time he’s going to cost you a draft position because of the way most
keeper leagues work is that once you’ve drafted that player and he’s going to be one of
your keepers the position you drafted in is going to be vacant for you for the rest of
your— every draft on there forward.
So if you drafted Adrian Peterson let’s say last year in the second round, you’re never
going to have a second round draft pick, again. So that’s something to keep in mind when
entering keeper league. The third type of league is an auction league and this is big in Las
Vegas where you— where gambling obviously is encouraged and as I mentioned earlier
thousands of dollars are wagered in fantasy football. Now in auction league you bid on
players so you have a salary cap. However many dollars you want 200, 300, 500. I’ve
seen some of leagues have a $1000 salary gap. And then you bid on players at each
position.
And if you have no money left at the end of the draft then you can’t fail to roster so this is
a great league if your really in the gambling and you have a chance to go to Vegas and
participate, their very exciting, their very competitive because you have a lot of money at
stake. I found these leagues to be very heated and the people who participate in these
leagues to be very, very knowledgeable because you know their personal finances are at
stake.
So again those are the three type of league the annual draft league, the keeper league and
the auction league and once you return on what kind of league you want to be in now
your going to have to know which player is to draft and that’s my next segment the top
five players at each position.

The glamour of American football as seen on NFL Sunday Ticket TV is something that is aspired to by many young men. Unfortunately, in reality it is very hard to come by.
