Transcript
Former Maoist child Soldiers Discharged in Nepal Val Wang: With songs from a lively band, the last group of child soldiers from Nepal’s former Maoist rebel army were discharged. Since the peace agreement between the Maoist and the government three years ago, they’ve been living in UN camps in the mountain district where the rebel uprising began 14 years ago. The Maoist leader Prachanda presided over the discharge ceremony which was attended by Nepalese international officials. With a blessing on their foreheads and garlands of marigolds, 237 former child soldiers were discharged, the last of more than 1800 released since January. Prachanda: This process will create a more conducive with the Tibet atmosphere for the integration and rehabilitation. Val Wang: The former child soldiers boarded buses in civilian clothing, bound for new lives. They will receive money as well as training and help setting up small businesses. Robert Piper: Will they pick up the phone and signup for one of the vocational training programs? Will they go back to school? Or will they make the wrong kinds of decisions and get involved with the wrong kinds of groups? And this is something that only the future will tell us. Val Wang: This is Val Wang, reporting for UNICEF Television.
