Transcript
Jennifer Mathews: A flash of red light is essentially all it took for Dr. Mark Sibley to fix Ann Quinn's eyesight Dr. Mark Sibley: In medical school they do not issue a magic wand, but this is the closest thing to getting a magic wand. Ann Quinn: The one thing that really scares me is the idea of losing my vision and not being able to see, and, frankly, you know, that is scary. Jennifer Mathews: Ann has glaucoma, which destroys sight without warning. Glaucoma is when too much pressure in the eye damages the optic nerve. Eye drops and drugs can lower the pressure, but Doctor Sibley says the new laser has fewer side effects. Dr. Mark Sibley: It is the safest treatment we have ever had in the treatment of glaucoma in history. Jennifer Mathews: It's called Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty or SLT. In the past hot lasers were used and could only be done once. SLT is a cold laser, meaning it can be repeated Dr. Mark Sibley: It is so precise it only lasers the drain, and it spares all the delicate tissue. Jennifer Mathews: Ann had the treatment on both eyes. Ann Quinn: The vision is clearer. I can read signs. I can drive without being a menace to people on the road. Jennifer Mathews: An avid traveler, Ann now says she wants to go back to Egypt with her husband to really see what she missed on their last trip. This is Jennifer Mathews reporting.
