John: Hey, nearly in, nearly in. Oh! Okay, well, that’s a Chip and Run and that is going to be the first part of our lesson today. Ruth: While Chip and Run, it has to jump or both? John: Yeah, the idea, for example, if you find your ball around the edge of the green and not actually on the green, it’s got to chip over the edge of the green, arrive on the flat part, and run. So, literally chip and run. Now, this is the shot that most beginners need to learn right from the first time on the golf course, because it’s probably that club that's going to help you the most to get around the golf course. There are a lot of other type of approach shots, high ones and so on, but for the beginning you need the very basic stuff. Okay. Up till now, we have learned what? The full swing. Okay, it’s been the full swing, full swing. We haven’t had time yet to devote to the little game and now we have to concentrate on this because we’re preparing you for the golf course okay, and this is where the score is made. Now, what I would like to do, is to explain to you just a little bit about the two clubs that we’re going to use 7-iron and 9-iron. I have chosen these two clubs because they are the ones that are usually in the short series, the short set that beginners start with. In a beginners set, there is usually 4, 5 irons and two wooden clubs, and maybe a putter. So, I have chosen a number 7-iron to make it easier for us, okay. Now, did you see the first shot that I made? I came over here like this, I made a small movement, rather like a putting stroke, if you have ever played mini golf, you’ve probably done this yourself. But what I’m going to do with you is something quite different. We’re going back to lesson number 1, we are going to use one hand only, because to get the feel of this shot, it’s much easier if you relate to again this famous natural instinct that we talked about. Do you remember how we would throw for example a ball like this and that it gives you immediately the right amount of force that you need to get the ball up to the hole. So you’re not going to be too far or too short. Okay. So this may seem rather strange, but I would like you to start all your practice and for you people at home as well, exactly the same thing, start your practice around the green with one hand. Hand behind the back, hand fairly low in the club and make a small little shot like this, rather like in lesson one, as I told you and as natural as you can, try and judge the right distance and just chip it down like this. Hey, baby, come on, come on. That’s a nice shot, okay. Now if you do as well as that, I’ll buy you all the drink in lunch time. Now the most important thing, it’s not really the direction for the moment, it’s for the distance. Am I going to get the right sort of distance, okay. Okay, off you go, little shot, that is too close to the green, Ruth, alright because I want to see you chip over the edge of the fairway and run it up to the hole. Hold the club a little lower, little bit lower for better control, because your right hand will be there in the real shot. Okay. Fine, do a little practice swing first, please Remy. Practice swing without the ball. Good. Okay, judge your distance, very little movement with the body, very little movement with the body, mostly with the arm. Okay, away you go, try it now. Okay line yourself up. Feet closer together, because it's only a tiny shot. Very good Remy, excellent. Okay, off you go. Ruth: Oh, Gosh. John: Okay well, there, it's as though you were bowling and you went -- like this. No, no. Come on, get your distance right, think about it first, think how much energy you would need to get those first two balls of mine. Ah, Ruth that’s beautiful. Well, I reckon you both are ready for two hands now, okay go and collect your balls and then we’ll try it okay. So you can see what we’ve been doing with Ruth and Remy is a very, very simple introduction to the shot game and this is what -- the attitude I would like you to adopt as well. There are many, many things to learn around the green. The little 7-iron, little 9-iron are absolutely perfect for you and that’s very elementary, but keep it that way. Good golf is easy and I don’t want you to get too complicated, not at this stage anyway. Okay, we are going to try it, alright, now no need to show you the grip, I don't think, you have got that both very well now. The only change you put your hands a little lower down the shaft. You choke up just a little bit on the shaft, like that, okay. Alright, ball will be situated on the left of middle, little bit left of middle, feet closer together than normal, nice and comfortable, line up as naturally as you can and away you go. Let’s not get too complicated. Let it come naturally and off you go, please Remy and Ruth. Hey, what’s this? Ruth: A blister that's -- John: The blisters shows that we’re working you well. Oh, beautiful shot. Oh, oh, Ruth. Okay, again, again, come on. Again. You mean you didn’t get that? That was beautiful. Alright, you got carried away there. Remy is doing it too, Remy, oh, beautiful. Fantastic, hey now I’m proud of you. Now you are getting the feel of it. You got two there that are quite close, one from Remy and one from you. All that practice is worth it, eh, good, and again, and again, and again, oh! That was really something. Will you two go and collect the balls now? So, you can see how we’re really getting more excited now over this. Genuine results there, makes the pro happy, makes you happy. We’ll be back in just a few minutes to show you the 9-iron.
