Hi! Welcome to Growing Wisdom and today we’re going to talk about asparagus. I love growing asparagus. I started doing this about 7 years ago. It’s one of those few vegetables that come up every single year, it’s a perennial. It comes up early in the spring and look how cool it is it looks like it does in a store as it’s just rising out of the ground. Basically you just cut it right at the base and go eat it. Now eventually, the asparagus stalks will get thinner and thinner and what you notice here is what happens to one of those stalks if you leave it. It becomes this beautiful asparagus like fern. When your asparagus gets to be pencil thin, stop harvesting it, leave it alone. Let it turn into the fern. It recharges the plant and next year, you’ll have more asparagus. Another tip, add a little bit of this compost to the top of your asparagus bed at the end of each spring and that will also help to keep the plants going year after year. Asparagus is a very heavy feeder of the nutrients in your garden so you want to keep giving it fertilizer to keep them growing. We’re growing here at Growing Wisdom, I’m Dave Epstein.
