Guadeloupe Big Game Tackle Box

Dan Hernandez: This week in Tackle Box, we are going to talk to you a little bit about what we are doing over Guadalupe Island Fishing with Top Gun 80 and out here Guadalupe is home of the big fish, big Blue Fin live here and time of year that we were there right now, big yellow fin tuna. Fished well over 100 pounds and to get advantage on those big fish. We are using the Kite, and with that Kite does is it gets us a large bait, right on the surface of the water, we use that Kite to lift that bait up, and we just bounce it right on the surface, just bounce it up and down, and those big Tuna will come out of the water and just boil on it. It's so exiting to watch it come out of the water and hit it. Now because we are using the Kite and getting that large squid right up on the surface, the hook is really never in the water, because that we are using monster size hooks, big U-claw hooks, heavy monofilament leader and then heavy line either monofilament are braid, and most of the time we are using heavy braid over 100 pound braid, sometimes 130 pound braid on large reels. And we really want to use is this one is 50-VSW, it's a great reel 2-Speed for these monster fish, fish over 100 pounds, this is perfect for those smaller fish under 100, you can't get away of the smaller reel, but why when using the Kite, you are cheating using that heavy line, you know I would say cheating a really isn't cheating, but it's a big advantage use that heavy line where fish can't the hook, can't see the line, so go ahead and go out with a heavy gear. Now if you are not using the Kite, and you are still out there fishing, you got a down size, a little bit smaller reel and lighter line, and this is where the 30-V series reels by Penn, the 2-Speeds come in, 30 would work great, again you are going using Heavy Braided Line probably 80 pound and then top shot, it would like 50 pound mono, 60 pound mono would be good there too. 2-Speed reel V-series by Penn International and the rod I am using here is a Dan Hernandez model is weighted for 50 pound and it work fine for this size Tuna. Fish under 100 pounds, this is an awesome outfit, but for those big Tuna, there is nothing like a large 2-Speed, that's why we are talking about the 50 V-series, and with the big one you got to with the heavy rods, the shorter rod, Ugly Stick series of shore rod, you want to go with the roller guides, roller tips, it just works good nice big gamble, it's a must for these big fish.
