Steve Rieck: One little trick you can do with harmonics is to learn to tune with harmonics, and what I mean by that is I am sure know the basic way of tuning from fifth fret to the open string or even the tenth fret of the sixth string and the open fourth string and tuning that way or that way as well. Well with harmonics you can tune as well and that's good idea when you don't have an electronic guitar tuner to actually use this method, the method down here and then also the harmonic method that I am about to show you to help you tune your guitar. If you do with all three of those you can get your guitar in most cases real close, as close as a tuner. So what I am going to do is demonstrate with the fifth fret harmonic on the sixth string that's the note E. The seventh fret on the fifth string is also E in the same range. So let's say those were out of tune. So I am just matching those up, those two Ds, fifth fret on the sixth string, seventh fret on the fifth string. Then I am just going to do the same thing on the fifth and fourth string. The fifth fret harmonic on the fifth string is the note A and so is the seventh fret harmonic on the fourth string A. So I am just matching those two. Then the fret harmonic on the fourth string is D as well as the seventh fret harmonic on the third string, D. So I am matching that. So far we have had -- we just want to make sure chime as unisons the same notes. Now when we get to the third and second string, things get a little weirder because we don't want to play the fifth fret harmonic on the third string that note would be G and then the seventh fret would be F sharp. So we are not doing that between the third and second string. What you would do rather is play the fourth fret harmonic. Remember this is going to be the major third above the open string. So this is note is B, the string is G, it's harmonic at the fourth fret or actually just right before the fourth fret, is a B note as well as the fifth fret harmonic on the second string. Notice these are the same note, but in the seventh fret harmonic on the first string. So we get B at the fourth fret of the third string, B at the fifth fret harmonic of the second string and B at the seventh fret harmonic of the first string. So if those all ring as the same note, in tune, you can kind of double-check your tuning with that method as well. So let's look at a few harmonic techniques next. Erik Mongrain: Hi, I am Erik Mongrain and today I am going to try and show you how to play the lap-tapping. Point here is, this technique is mostly improvisation. For me I would say 75% improvisation and 25% structures.
