Chris Niles: You’re watching UNICEF television. Qalqilyah is a small city in the West Bank. It’s completely encircled by the barrier or wall that separates the city from the surrounding countryside getting past the barrier requires a permit and it’s making a bad economic situation worst. Unemployment is rising and more than 60% of residence lived below the poverty line. Rami Assaf: People are suffering because of the barrier. It has a negative impact on children’s wellbeing. It is worst than other areas because children have no free movement. Chris Niles: UNICEF works with the YMCA to try and restore sense of normalcy in children’s lives. But children with disabilities, the chance to have some fun is even more important. Anwar: We are happy here because we are under stress from school and we like to go out and have fun to release our tension. Ayman: I like the balloon game the most and my favorite color is blue. When I pop the balloon I am very happy. Chris Niles: To help restore the childhood of the most disadvantaged UNICEF also works with the European Commission Humanitarian Aid Office as well as games, it provides counseling for the stress that is part of children’s daily lives. But despite the restrictions on their movements these children continue to dream of a better life. Anwar: I wish to continue my education in college and study English language so that I can travel to the United States.
