EmpowHer Asks: What are some tips that can help a woman prevent the complication of Type 1 Diabetes? Henry Do, MD Hospitalist/Regional Medical Officer There's a lot of things you can do, one of the things that we do not program is we really try and get the patient involved into care. We have one on one counseling, we have education and we really try that the patient involve for one the patient needs to be motivated, it needs to be involve in the care, its need to be educated about the diabetes. And so you really need to be involve in the care and need to really want to control you're diabetes and understand it. And then exercise is a very key part of controlling a complications and a regular exercise routine. And then of course diet is a key as well. Being educated on what types of foods to eat, what type of foods not to eat, how to check the blood glucose levels and what—how to do to respond to that if its too high or if it gets too low. Watching out for the signs and symptoms of too high blood sugar and too low blood sugar, of course there is medications and then you have insulin is the main stay of treatment for type one diabetes. And so there is different types of insulin, there is different ways to give the insulin and so they needed to be educated on that as well and we do that in our program here.
