Megan: Hi! My name is Megan, I'm from Yellow Springs, Ohio, and I would like to know how traction works? Andrew Sama: Megan, your question is a good one. Traction is something that is designed to sort of unload the discs of the back. So as we stand and as we go through our day, our weight and gravity cause pressure on the discs of the back which can bulge and press on the nerve. Pretty time-honored tradition in physical therapy has been one of traction, which means gentle pulling through the spine to unload the discs, therefore decrease the pressure on the nerves. That should be done in a controlled fashion under the guidance of a skill therapist.
