Sherry: News Canada, In4mation for life Every homeowner wants to have a lawn that is lush, green and healthy. Not only does a healthy lawn look great but it is also critical to our environment especially in urban centers. And making your lawn thick and lush maybe easier than you think. A green lawn not only looks great but it is important to our quality of life, did you know a healthy lawn helps to clean the air, keeps us cool, reduces noise levels and diminishes soil erosion, but having a healthy lawn means giving it some TLC this spring. Kathy Russell is with Scotts Canada. Kathy: Lawns lie dormant all winter, they lose a lot of nutrients and those nutrients need to be replaced. That is where fertilizer comes in. Look for a fertilizer that has a high first number. That is your nitrogen, that way you are going to ensure that you get a great looking lawn and it will green out fast. Also, look for a fertilizer that has an all in one particle. This particle ensures you get even feed it and no burning guaranteed. Make sure you read the directions on the bag they will tell you exactly how much fertilizer to put down. There is a lot of great spreaders on the market today that will help you make sure that you do put the right amount down but also guide you so that you are not putting fertilizer in the garden or on driveways. Sherry: Fixing thin patches is another important part of lawn maintenance. Kathy: In the spring you may have bare patches of thinning areas in your lawn. It is important to understand what causes those areas, was it pet damage, was it sculpting from your lawn mower or potentially it could be grubs that have infected your grass. A great way to thicken your lawn and help fill in bare patches is to over seed your lawn every spring. What over seeding is actually adding soil and grass seed to an existing lawn that way you will be able to fill in the bare patches and you will have a great looking lawn all season long. If you have holes in your lawn or areas that you need to repair quickly, there is a great new patch kits on the market today that you can use that contain everything you need the seed, the fertilizer to mulch. All you have to do is fill in the area water and you will have grass in not time. Sherry: And when you water, water deeply to encourage root growth. Kathy: It is easy to have a great looking lawn this season by regularly fertilizing your lawn by over seeding you will have a great looking weed free lawn all season long.
