Hello, everyone and welcome to backyard effects. This week were answering your request and showing you how to make an alien hand. Creating and alien custom has been requested by a tons of indimogulers Chuck, moviespillage, Kosmo VideoLoser, sheeparecool, Parody R’Us Productions, Luca, Peter, Pieontheside, Gregor Lumpkus, tyman1234, moviemansam89, DirectorfromDK, slyer, Nick, Dan, Coolman11, BdizzleProductions, CR-Videos, bitchin’ guns, majicat, Red Dragon, David Axelsson, William Keating, BackyardBasementFilms, ZHunter, fighterfat11, Lukas Cacheiro, websurf03 and BleleinRakf586 all want an alien creature for cheap. And since I just finished watching District Nine this week were going to focus on a Prawn like alien hand. And help us create this extra terrestrial master pieces will be turning to build team member Ariel. A rubber gloves, paper towels, liquid latex, some acrylic paints and news paper. The first step is to take your rubber glove and fill the whole thing with newspaper. It takes a while to get the newspaper inside all of the fingers but it’s important to fill out the gloves before we start turning it into an alien hand. Since this alien only has three fingers you’ll need to use some electrical tape secure the fingers like so. Next, mixed up some liquid latex and black acrylic paint, if you want your alien hand to be a different color, feel free to substitute the black with the different colored paint. Now, its time to build up the base layer of your alien hand, taking stripes of paper towels slowly build up the basic shape of each tentacle applying liberal amounts of liquid latex as you go. Shape the small large and thumb tentacles like so, this step will take some time but you can use a hair drier to help the latex dry faster. Now, that we have the basic shape of our alien hand we need to go in strengthen it up a bit and add some more texture, first take some more paper towels stripes and liquid latex and add reinforcement to the areas of the hand that will move most. For more texture and detail were going to use cotton balls you guess it more liquid latex. Take a cotton ball and rip in half, then roll it into a thin strip like so using liquid latex stick these little strips across the length of each tentacle. Repeat, repeat, and repeat some more. For the knuckles, Ariel added a whole cotton ball then shaped more smaller strips around that as accents. Remember that you should occasionally take a break and dry all the latex before adding the next layer. Ones you're happy with the top of your hand dry everything add some baby power and flip it over to finish the bottom. For the back side of the tentacle Ariel used more liquid latex and larger pieces of the cotton balls to create a creepy hand pad thingy and finish off with some smaller lumps on the palm. Ones you’ve dried and powdered the other side you’re almost done and ready for paint. We use the light green paint on the under side of the hand and then blended it up into a darker green on the sides and finally accented the blacks that were already on the top of the hand with a little bit of green. Before you shoot just cover up the scenes of your alien hand with some bloody bandages or a long sleeve shirt and just like that, you are done and ready to create your own sci-fi masterpiece. Well that wraps up another awesome BFX build episode. If you want to keep going and create an entire alien costume, try combining the hands from this episode. Our space suit episode for the body and a modified version of the fish mask to create the aliens face, just like that you’ve created yourself a bonified alien creature. Make sure and check out the alien hand test film coming up tomorrow and let us know what you're favorite movie alien is by leaving a comment down below.
