How to Milk a Cow

Today we visit the Freund Farm to get a quick lesson in how to milk a cow from Matthew Freund of Freund's Farm and Market.
Transcript
Eric Rowchow: I did, I gave blood this morning so I think everyone should considered donating blood.
Speaker: You are special right?
Eric Rowchow: I have O negative blood, which I have learned only 7% of the population has and it is a universal donor blood so anyone like in an emergency room can have my blood, Eric's blood. However if I go to the emergency room and screwed because-- if I go to the emergency room it's a problem because--
Speaker: It's special.
Eric Rowchow: Yeah! I am special, so.
Speaker: Are you special?
Eric Rowchow: Yeah! I am special, so. So it's the Freund's Farm and Market, which is in East Canadian. It's near our house appeal we drive it by everyday, we stop here lot, we buy a lot of snacks here. We buy food, we buy their plants and vegetables here and we asked Mathew trying to run the dairy operations here and if we could come and milk a cow. So, we are going to learn about milk and a cow. Mathew and Teresa run a dairy farm and a plant nursery and a farmer's market and it's really quite amazing.
Farm's can have a big impact on the local environment and then they produce a lot of manure, they produce a lot of lead shed and things and farmers like Mathew are being really proactive in keeping that to a real minimum. They are making these things called cow pots which we are going to do a show on but Mathew's invented these biodegradable pots that are made out of manure which are really cool. They are taking all of there manure that is created here, they are using it in different ways, they have a methane digester and they create methane gas and they heat a bunch of the buildings. They have a lead shed tank and they take that and it's essentially a great fertilizer and they put that on their field to grow grass and hay. So, it's very cool.
Eric Rowchow: And he heats his house with it.
Speaker: And they heat this house with it.
Speaker: Not just the house they all have buildings--
Eric Rowchow: He is got the gadgets galore here and it's very cold. So, Mathew's got to take it to the dairy farm, he is going to let me milk the cow as best I can.
Speaker: And where is your snacks?
Eric Rowchow: Oh! And I will get a snacks afterwards which is the best part of this. Because they really have good snacks here, they have like banana bread with cranberry and walnut or chocolate bread pudding.
Speaker: I thought chocolate covered or--
Eric Rowchow: Chocolate covered or -- Teresa is a good baker let just say that.

Eric Rowchow: I have never milk a cow before, I mean I been around cows all my life but that's new and Mathew is a good guy. Hi! Here we go, so I take this, can I clean him.
Speaker: Yeah! Here we go. Even if it hits, just hold on, then they won't--
Eric Rowchow: Okay! Now I an going to squeeze the milk out and you take your thumb and your forefinger here and then you work it down like that. And we are hand milking a cow. Here we go, we clean the tits and now ready for the machine.
Speaker: Yeah.
Eric Rowchow: And so I will just take this and I do the top them off milk on.
Speaker: Yes.
Eric Rowchow: alright and we are making milk. I have a future in a diary industry. So, when the machine sense, when the machine senses there is not anymore milk coming out, it disconnects the vacuum and it drops down and then this thing poised it back up in.
Speaker: We are going to be back here in midnight tonight and there was --
Speaker: Yeah, I will be here in midnight tonight through this.
Female Speaker: Do you milk them twice a day.
Speaker: Twice a day.
Eric Rowchow: This is a lot of work, and think about where your milk comes from, so there you go. That's how you milk a cow. You clean them, you squeeze them out and pop up the machine. That's pretty cool, you get the air tight and the thing that they do is twice a day they do this now, which is about noon and they do it at midnight. So, when you are sleeping some of them are milking cows for your milk.
And this is a pretty amazing operation. Mathew is also doing the cow pop which we have got a bunch of inventions here, and heats this whole hole and a lot of the surrounding buildings with methane from a methane digester from the cow manure, it's kind of amazing. So, we got to thank Matthew and his wife Teresa and also the guys that work here for putting up this.
My cow is still pumping. So, I did it right surprisingly. So, what do you think of my milking capabilities there?
Female Speaker: You are an expert.
Eric Rowchow: I am an expert.
Female Speaker: I don't know about that.
Eric Rowchow: I worked that well, that was pretty cool, that was pretty neat.
Female Speaker: She was going to kick you though.
Eric Rowchow: Yeah, that cow did, I think the cow got a sense of what I didn't know exactly what I was doing there.
