How To Mix: How To Use The Harmonic Button on a DJ

Alright folks, well, you know, this is a demonstration of two tracks that sound really well together, but, once their beat-matched, they don't sound that well together, here's where the harmonic button can help you.

Alright folks, Jonathan here. This is video yes really funny hot on and I am wearing a dressing gown. Well you know, I mean you got to use the things you have for Christmas are you not? Okay, this is video number seven in the art of harmonic mixing. Sort of like a tutorial but maybe like a demonstration here. Okay, let us say for example you got this scenario, you have two tracks that sound really well together but let us say they are not beat matched then let us say you beat match them and you think brilliant but once they are beat matched and they do not sound that well together, how can you get around it? There are some mixes that you can actually mess around with the mixer and you can change the actual tone or the key of the track while it is still at the same speed which is very important. First of all let us all have a listen to this it is Freaks, “The Cripps get on the Dance floor.” It sounds a bit of this and by the way you just listen to it or so we have not got the plug in thing to the side of the camera. (Demo) Let us say for example now we wanted to mix it with another track but the other track will say a lot faster so we have to like so. (Demo) Then all of a sudden when that CD change tone of the track so how can we get that back to the original tone we had. On this mixer we got a lot of button which is got the harmonic on it, now you press that. First of all I want you to listen to the tone of track when it stays at the center. Bring it up. (Demo) Now, if I reduced that, now I will show you that very closely in the minute. If we put it back down you will see the low up but we brought it back to the original position. Now, what I am going to do is I am going to put this back to the original position. (Demo) Do it again. Alright, so what is happening? What am I doing over there, and what is going on here, we will have a close look. Alright, basically on this mixer what you got, you got four nice shiny button things here and one has got harmonic on it, the other one has got sweep for you chimneys, the other one has got crash you know if you want to crash an orange or an apple is it not, and the other one has got filthy, you can sit on those in your car could you not and those that will work these styles here which is on each individual channel. Basically, what you can actually do and this is a fantastic thing that is why I like is that you can change the tone, the key of the track without speeding it up or slowing it down on the actual pitch. Again, alright let us say like I said earlier you got a track and you need to beat match them, as soon as you beat match them on the right on key and then of course you know messing around with this you cannot actually get a backing key. What I do like as well is if you want to say lift the track, take it to the next level, you want o lift the crowd you can actually change the key of the track and lift the crowd and take that one notch higher. I will show you exactly what I was doing so if we just go about there, let us play the track again. (Demo) Put it back to the center so the actual vital turntable now is dead center on the beat. We will press the harmonic button now watch what will happen, come and listen. (Demo) The tone is going lower while I mean to start clockwise and then back to the center on it is original tone, original beat and then move it up. So there you go, you are lifting. Basically, that is what you hand in. Hopefully, in another future video we will actually put this into practice and enjoy. Thank you very much.
