Turning the double play becomes a pitchers best friend and it is important that you understand as a second baseman what your options are with regard getting the ball to the short stop to turn the double play. We call this one our swivel. This is a ball directly at us, so Kurt breaks down if you would. Kurt from his break down position fielding position, once receives the ball is going to swivel his feet, swivel. He is going to drop his left knee to the ground, his gong to open his body to his short stop and he is going to field in the ball slightly up hill so we can make a good strong feet. Okay Kurt let us go again, one more time show me how you do it break down, swivel.
Swivel on the feed(ph) and he has to have a little bit arm whip. The arms got to whip just a little bit so we get a good solid field(ph). Again, hit your short stop right on the chess with it. Okay coach if you would let us go and feed(ph) Kurt and them couple, he is charging it, will not have to charge too much on this one. This is a sixth ball,, this is going to be good double play ball,. Swivel, notice how they drop the left knee to the ground, you do not have to touch the ground if you do not want to but you come close and notice how you drop down a little bit through the ball slightly up hill okay.
The second technique we are going to use is a ball that moves in fielder to his right, to his right. A ball that takes in that direction any ball hit to the right of Adam, he ought to be in to a flip if he got decent positioning. So we are gong to take a look at where Adam walking through on what we would consider to be a flip. Okay Adam, ball slightly over here, breakdown, call it, you notice Adam is going to tell his partner what he wants, he is going to flip the ball that way or short stop knows were to look for the ball as it comes up to him.
Okay normal positioning, okay here we go coach, to his right, break down, flip and you notice he walks a throw right to him. Okay Kurt, slide up here, ball to the right, flips the ball right to him, walks right to him. Now your flip here becomes pertinent(ph). The third option, in terms of the way you have to go to the field to double play is on the ball hit to your left. We would phrase this one to be realistically a five play and the reason is a five play is simple because it causes us to move a little and we are going to be a little bit slower to that ball. On this ball that Kurt is going to work on, he is going to take from his normal positioning a slight move to his left, four or five feet, he going to go this way, he is going to break down. On this one, since his feet is on motion heading to the left he is going to jump turn, give him self in position to throw go, jump turn, he will not stand straight up, you notice how he still bend a little bit and he gets rid of the ball slightly up hill, so he gets a good feed to the short stop. Okay let us do it one more time.
Are you ready? To your left, break down, jump turn, bang. He just changes one foot for the other. He takes the right foot, slides it behind, the left foot, slide in front stays low, throws a slightly up hill okay here we go. To the left, jump turn, quick with the feet and nice strong feet just high to the short stop. Jumps turn good, an absolute worse(ph) we got to force play on this one.
The forth and final method for turning a double play is one in which we are realistically looking at just getting a force out. It is a ball that takes a second baseman away to his left, he is going to fill the ball turn his back to the end field and make a solid throw back across to the short stop, to the second base bag. Again we are not going to turn a double play your chances are unless a man falls down and he is horrible slow but we can get a double play. Okay Kurt let us walk through it, he is going to start to his left, he is going to keep going, he is getting ready to fill the ball, drop down fill the ball, he have turn his back to the end field and go.
Now you are going to notice him plant really hard on that right foot when he is going down. Okay come on back over, let us go through it one more time, okay ready. To your left, fill the ball plant, bang up and make a good strong throw. Okay let us take a looked at him coach, see if we can get him done. To his left, he fills the ball turn his back, plants hard make a good strong throw. Fields the ball plant, good strong throw, if we can get one here we are in great shape. Two here would be a bonus.
