How to Recycle Batteries

Battery recycle programs are a great way to help out the environment. AsktheBuilder.com host Tim Carter shares some battery recycling information so you can do your share of environmental care. You should always recycle a battery if you can.

Okay, smile, what do you think? This is a good quiz. Tell me, do you know what this camcorder, my laptop computer, this Quadro's drill, and my cellular phone, all have in common? I will tell you what, they have got a rechargeable NiCd battery in them. Well think about it, how many hundreds of millions of these things do you think are out there in America today? And I can tell you there's tens and thousands, maybe hundreds of thousands of these batteries in the Greater Cincinnati area. What happens when they go bad? Do you throw them in the garbage? If you do, you are making a mistake, they have got very toxic chemicals inside of them and they can harm the environment if they are not disposed off properly. They can be recycled and you should recycle them. How do you do it? Does it cost you money? No, it's for free. Make sure you look on the label of the battery, you will see where it will say Nickel Cadmium, if you find that, here is what I want you to do. Go look for a Sears store, a Wal-Mart, Circuit City, RadioShack, or Target store here in the area, there is a really good chance that they are an authorized recycle center. You just give the battery to the Store Manager, or a clerk, they will do the rest. They take them to the recycling center, and the environment is a better place. It's easy to take rechargeable batteries in and out of your tool, make sure you do the right thing, it's easy to recycle as well. Look for one of the recycle centers and help our environment.
