How to Reverse Aging Through Skin Care

Audra: We all pay so much attention to the products, needles and surgery that make us look younger that we hardly stop to think about the daily factors that are actually aging our skin. Dr. Gerald Imber is here. He’s a plastic surgeon and author of The New Youth Corridor. He’s here to help us reverse again without surgery and avoid those skin again triggers that you never knew were damaging. Some there you're going to really surprised people, welcome to the show Dr. Great to have you here. I know I was reading your book and you said that we should look the same [pretty much the same between the ages of 30 and 60. Is that based on your philosophy of prevention, maintenance, collection?
Dr. Gerald: I think that’s right, I think you have a right to look virtually the same between 30 and 60. But it doesn’t happen without a little bit of work. I mean you can't wish for it. You have to do things and we’re going to try and help you help yourself.
Audra: You say we should start with some over-the-counter products, simple products that everybody can find out there, right?
Dr. Gerald: Absolutely. I mean you have to start with prevention. Divide it into three things. Prevention is for young people to prevent accelerating aging. And maintenance is for people in that intermediate aging. Correction is for people already seeing signs of again,. If you put the three things together and that arc, you can look the same all your life.
Audra: Well we know and we’re constantly hearing things about you know sun exposure, smoking, things that can make you look older and age your skin. There are a lot of things that I didn’t know about like you say running? Runners, their skin can—
Dr. Gerald: Well yeah, if you think about. Think about watching someone run in slow motion. You see their cheeks bounce up and down. You see a woman’s breast bounce up and down and she wouldn’t think about running without a jogging bra. Do you wear one on your face? It's the same thing, it stretches the skin every time your heel hits. And so, if you run a mile once or twice a week, nothing terrible is going to happen. But you’ve never seen a real long distance runner who wasn’t haggard looking.
Audra: Yeah well, we do. I use to run but I didn’t think about it like that.
Dr. Gerald: It ruins your skin.
Audra: And what about facial exercises? You say those also can cause wrinkles too?
Dr. Gerald: They do cause wrinkles because facial exercises are really a wrinkle workout. What it does, the muscles attached to your skin. So when you do this and squint, that’s a facial exercise. it's the squint lines. When you purse your lips, it gives you lip lines. The facial muscle exercises are insane. Do not do them.
Audra: What about dieting, like the yo-yo dieting or eve if you're considered too thin. Can that affect your skin?
Dr. Gerald: Well you know if you're always very, very thin it's fine. But if you lose weight immediately and then gain it again, what you're doing is you're stretching your skin out of shape like you stretch a pair of pantyhose or an elastic top out of shape. You have to maintain a pretty steady weight. And as you passed 21, it doesn’t spring back the way it used to.
Audra: Okay so you got a few products here in terms of anti-aging recommendations and you’ve got some information about each one that we can all learn from it too.
Dr. Gerald: I do but I think that what we have to understand is the most important thing of any product on the market today is the something that prepare, that rescues collagen from sun damage and helps build collagen. The thing that does have best is vitamin C. and the issue with vitamin c is you have to get it into the skin. And so one of the products that we recommend for people is we have this antioxidant boost which is a serum which is a serum which is vitamin C in high concentration and vitamin E. and we’ve added to it a number of ingredients particularly Melatonin which actually is been proven to drive the vitamin C into the skin.
So instead of just sitting there, it works. It's an antioxidant and it stops free radical activity. So it stops you from breaking down your collagen. It keeps your skin elastic and it actually works.
Audra: And also these products here, is it more for protection?
Dr. Gerald: This—protection, we have a moisturizer with a sun block and it's kind of approved because you put your moisturizer on, you’re automatically wearing your sun block and all the other products are made to go along with is or some with alphahydroxy acids and green tea. And it's a whole—again, a whole companion of things that will help you help yourself.
Audra: A few seconds left. Honestly, assess our skin is something that we really have to do, right?
Dr. Gerald: Yeah.
Audra: Okay, pay attention to it.
Dr. Gerald: You really have to and it's your own fault if you don’t.
