Audra Lowe: We all know that decorating can be on the pricey side but Rhiannon got some great tips from celebrity designer Jennifer Adams. They’re talking about how you can add some distinctive touches to your house without making a big imprint on your wallet. Rhiannon Ally: Thanks Audra. Welcome Jen. Jennifer Adams: Thank you. Rhiannon Ally: Nice to have you. Jennifer Adams: Nice to be here. Rhiannon Ally: Okay so let’s talk, the economy has been down for what seems like a really long time. People, are they even spending money on decorating right now? Jennifer Adams: You know I’m seeing a trend towards starting to spend money again. It was slow for a while but people are paying attention to more comfortable items and practicality and getting a bigger bang for their buck and they’re definitely starting to spend though, which is good. Rhiannon Ally: Well people still want their homes to look nice even if they don’t have a lot of money to spend, right? Jennifer Adams: Exactly and there are ways that you can do that and save money in the process. I’ve got some great online resources that I’m addicted to. There’s a website called onekingslane and they have all the latest trends and all the latest and hottest brands for interior design and they run sales every single day. So you just become a member, it’s free and you can see where -- my products are even on there and we run every eight weeks. So you get really good discounts. People will even give them their products at 50% off of what they normally sell. Rhiannon Ally: Wow, 50% off, that’s a pretty big savings. Jennifer Adams: Yeah and there’s another website I love called ideally.com, same kind of principle. They run sales on really topnotch brands that you would never be able to get, go into their store and get that price. Rhiannon Ally: What are some stores that offer great discounts? Jennifer Adams: Well there’s things like Tuesday morning that do real budget-driven, loose end things from other people’s lives but you can also go in to a lot of the boutique furniture stores now and just negotiate and say, because people right now want to make a sale but they can’t necessarily say everything’s discounted and look like they’re going out of business. So you can walk in and just say, “Is this the best price?” or “Do you have a sale coming up soon?” or “I really want this but I can’t quite afford it --” Rhiannon Ally: Ask without really asking. Jennifer Adams: Yes. And it really works. It works, I mean as designers we do it all the time for walk-ins but as a regular homeowner, you can do it anywhere. The same with contractors, right now, contractors need work. What I recommend doing is go to -- even my Craigslist or Angie’s List online and I know Craigslist at times is thought of as not being safe but I have used it with great success. Rhiannon Ally: I sold furniture on Craigslist, it was very successful so I had a good experience but I know others have -- you know, it is a little -- Jennifer Adams: I’ve had a phenomenal experience with that. I’ve even put things out and said, okay, I need to get this room painted, not for a client but when it’s myself, I could take more chances and say, I’ve got $1000.00 budget and this is what I need, put it out to bed within five minutes, you’ll get a ton of contractors that are willing to do the work because they’re all standing by looking on Craigslist. Rhiannon Ally: Yeah well okay for someone sitting at home right now, thinking about redesigning, what is the biggest bang for their buck? Where should they really spend in their house? Jennifer Adams: It’s always paint. It’s the least expensive thing that you could do for yourself and it makes a huge impact and if you need a designer’s help, treat it like a contractor, negotiate, call and say, “I’ve got this budget. What can you do for me?” Or call a design school and you can save a lot of money. Rhiannon Ally: Great idea. Jennifer Adams: Yeah because there are so many students that are willing to work and they can help you out for just a fraction of the price. Rhiannon Ally: Thank you so much Jen. Great tips for everyone at home and Audra it sounds like it’s time to redecorate both our places, what do you think? Audra Lowe: Yeah, a little decorating definitely goes a long way in a low house, that’s for sure. Thanks a lot Rhiannon.
