Important Black Pop Culture Moments
Audra Lowe: Alright February’s Black history months so what better way to celebrate than the highlights some of the most important pop culture moments in black history. Tariq Muhammad is the editor-in-chief of Blackvoices.com. Tariq is here to talk about some of the most impressive barrier breaking moments. Welcome back Tariq, good to see you.
Tariq Muhammad: Good to see you.
Audra Lowe: Whenever I see I know it must be black history month right through. Well, you guys have a great list on your website which really does a fantastic job of highlighting a lot of celebrities and maybe not so well known names for this month. And when talking about TV shows that really changed the face of African-American there are two in particular that you highlight.
Tariq Muhammad: Absolutely. There are two—there are more for children which is sesame street which that was the first time there was really a multi-culture cast of characters who were speaking to children and giving the children a sense of there’s more than just a person that you see in your neighborhood there’s a whole broad range of people outside and that you can interact well that would really make your experience richer and that was something that other generations did get a chance to grow with.
Audra Lowe: Yes, I was been around for along time too, just around and also the Cosby Show.
Tariq Muhammad: That’s right. The Cosby Show was one of those things were this was a cultural touch on everyone watched the Cosby Show. And it what made you realize is that I don’t see these necessary successful African-Americans in my neighborhood but it do exist because sometimes people thought, there are no—are there doctors, are there lawyers out there, people who have achieved—was never a fashion in the Black community while people in the community knew it wasn’t widely portrayed on television, this was an opportunity to do that.
Audra Lowe: Expose people too.
Tariq Muhammad: Absolutely.
Audra Lowe: And talking about athletes that broke barriers, Michael Jordan, Jackie Robinson those were just two of the names you highlighted, what is that?
Tariq Muhammad: Well, Jackie Robinson I think Jackie Robinson really was the precursor for any modern African-American athlete in any league. He happened to be a major in baseball but he really endured a lot and help kind of break those barriers so that others could come through and make sure that in fact people had a chance and there was a really level playing field in that regard. And then when you think about Michael Jordan, Michael Jordan was really the first multinational superstar athlete who was also a marketing maven in international star in his own right. So that again pave the way for people like Kobe Bryant to achieve the sort of fame outside of the basketball arena that they have LeBron James or even Tigerwoods and golf that ability to transcend the sport and become an international icon for marketing was something that Michael Jordan really led the way in.
Audra Lowe: Well, speaking of an icon when you’re taking about music this one man was responsible for a lot of people’s career, was he in front of the camera necessarily behind the scenes Berry Gordy.
Tariq Muhammad: Berry Gordy. He was responsible for a lot of careers and even outside the influence of Motown because with Berry Gordy and Motown day was really bringing a new sound, a sound of black America to the white wider audience and it was accepted and people then have a lot of opportunities that they hadn’t had before even going down today I mean you see the influence of Berry Gordy in careers today and it was funny as I was watching the Grammy’s last week I saw Berry Gordy in the audience.
Audra Lowe: He’s around for a long time he’s not going anywhere at all too. Then when we’re talking about media moguls, Oprah Winfrey obviously Jay-Z, Beyonce making the list and then breaking the Oscar barrier you’ve had highlighted Halle Berry, Sidney Poitier people like that that really—
Tariq Muhammad: And Denzel Washington and what is great was that when Denzel and Halle won in the same year which is amazing but it really was when you think about Sidney Poiter won in Oscar there were over two decades that past between the time that he won the Oscar and then Denzel Washington and that clearly have been excellent performances but people of color in the movie sense. So it was really was a absence that was begging to be filled and it was a pleasure to see these things happen at the same year.
Audra Lowe: It’s always good to take a positive look back too. You guys did a great job on your website in doing that. Good to see you again Tariq.
Tariq Muhammad: Thank you, good to see you too.
