Intel and its partners displayed over 40 motherboards built for the new microprocessors

Transcript
Nick: Intel showed off a number of computer system and at least 40 new motherboards built by partners for new Intel microprocessors that officially launch on Tuesday. The company launch three new Quad Core processors, formally codenamed Linfield as well as the new Xenon 34 hundred series processors aimed at local servers. One special note to the event in Taipei, was the P55 express chip set from Intel, the first ever from the company that is only one chip instead of two. Navin: For our entire history, we had two chips chip sets, now it’s a single chip chip set. Nick: Chip sets are the pair of chips known as the north bridge and south bridge inside a computer that regulate the flow of data traffic between the microprocessor and other components. Intel was able to turn the P55 express chip set into a single chip by transferring some of its workload directly on to the Linfield microprocessors such as giving them integrated memory controls. Dozens of new motherboards built for the new Linfield microprocessors were on display at the Intel event in Taipei, launch by the leading makers, including a Asus tech, Gigabyte, MSI, Elite group computing systems, and Foxcon technology. Autobuy showed off a high powered gamer PC with an Intel Core I7870 microprocessor inside. A 1 terabyte hard drive, 2 gigs of memory, and in video GTX 275 graphics card, and a blue ray disc drive, it cost just over 1600 US dollars. Intel normally carefully controls the launch on new microprocessors, but the three new Intel desktop microprocessors all showed in Taipei’s Guang Ha computer market around the first week of August, well ahead of the launch. Chips and PCs weren’t the only thing in the event though, Intel even gave out a branded face mask to combat swine flu. With reporting by Dan Nicetat in Taipei, I’m Nick Barber, IDG news service.
