Using Visual Studio to create solutions on Microsoft Office SharePoint Server has typically been very complicated. If you have been looking for a tool to make this integration earsier, you’ve come to the right place. I am John Jensen, a Test Lead in the SharePoint Designer products group at Microsoft, and we worked hard in this release to enable the creation of SharePoint application without requiring any code on the server. Workflows, data views, CSS Customization and page layout, all work together to create both highly functional web application that also look great. In this chapter, we use Visual Studio to create a custom site definition on the SharePoint server, then we use that custom definition to create a new site application on a server and customize that application in SharePoint designer. Whether you want to create event handlers for list item creation, or custom workflow actions, this chapter will get you started quickly and easily, and teach you that the point custom code is as easy as creating any solution in Visual Studio. Now, you will see me using four snippets in Visual Studio. Those snippets are included as the project files for the series and should be copied into your personal Visual Studio’s snippets folder.
