In this lesson, let’s learn about interesting addition patterns. We have two problems, the first one is what we’re going to do first. It wants us to write the number that makes each sentence true. Okay, 2 + 6, when we add 2 and 6, what do we get? We get 8, this is simple. 20 + 60 becomes a little bit difficult, right? But here is an easy way of doing it. We know that 2 ones + 6 ones = 8 ones, we just did this. Now instead of ones, if I replace this with tens, 2 tens + 6 tens should give us 8 tens. Let’s see if we can use this. 2 tens is right here, 6 tens is right here and it should give us 8 tens. 8 tens is 80, okay? So we can see this pattern. Similarly 2 hundreds + 6 hundreds will give us 8 hundreds. Similarly, 2 thousand + 6 thousand will give us 8 thousand. As you can see, we’re using a pattern which basically says that anytime I have 2 + 6, if the units are the same, the place values are the same, the end result would be the same. So 2 and 6 ones when added gives us 8 ones, similar with 2 and 6 hundreds when added gives us 8 hundreds. Let’s do problem two. Problem two is similar. It says that Sarah has 300 dog stickers plus 500 cat stickers. How many items does she have altogether? Well, she has 3 hundreds stickers + 5 hundreds stickers, we need to find the sum. Well, let’s use the patter to figure this out. 3 ones + 4 ones = 8 ones, right? 3 + 5 = 8. Similarly instead of ones, if we have tens, what would we get? 3 tens + 5 tens would give us 8 tens which is 80. Similarly, we can say 3 hundreds + 5 hundreds, it will give us 8 hundreds. What is 8 hundred? 800, that’s what we’re looking for. 3 hundreds + 5 hundreds gives us 800. That’s the answer.
