Learn Bout Addition Properties In this lesson, let’s learn about the properties of addition. We learn about things like the associative property, the commutative property etcetera. Keep these numbers and watch out for these values or these terms. The problem says that the world’s smallest rodent is the pygmy mouse. Its head and body measure 1.4 inches and the tail measures 2.8 inches. How long is the pygmy mouse from head to tail? That’s easy. We have to add 1.4 inches, that’s the head to body, and then the tail is 2.8 inches. This should give us the total length of the pygmy mouse. What if I want to add these two? Let’s learn how we do that. 1.4 can be represented as 1 + 0.4., 2.8 can be represented as 2 + 0.8. So now we have to add these which means, I have to add these four. So, let’s start. We’ll do 1 + 0.4, that’s the length of the head and body, plus 2 + 0.8. That’s the original statement. So the sum that we have to add, this is the same as – I can use the associative of property, which says it doesn’t matter if we’re adding a series of numbers. It doesn’t matter which ones we group were. So I could also write this as 1 + 0.4 + 2. I grouped these two together, plus 0.8. It makes no difference. This is the associate of property, which says that the order in which these numbers are grouped in terms of addition does not impact to sum. Well if this is the case then what we can do is use the commutative property to now, switch these values. 0.4 + 2 is the same as 2 + 0.4, no difference. Commutative property says that A + B is the same as B + A. The order of the numbers being added can be reversed without changing the sum. So instead of 0.4 + 2, we can have 2 + 0.4. Now I can use the associative again to regroup. So instead of grouping at this way, what if we group it this way? 1 + 2 + 0.4 + 0.8. Now this becomes easier, 1 + 2 is 3, 0.4 + 0.8 is 1.2, 3 + 1.2 is 4.2. These are the properties that we have to remember. Associative property says that it doesn’t matter. I can have different groupings and group this and this together, it’s not going to impact the final sum. Second, if I can do this, I can do this. 2 + 0.4 is the same as 0.4 + 2. That’s the commutative property. It’s not going to impact the sum. So what do we left with? We try and group one and two, 0.4 and 0.8, and we get 3 + 1.2 which is easy to add. The last property that we did not highlight is any number, 0.8 + 0 is 0.8. This is the identity property, which means any number added to zero is the same number as the number itself. This is the identity property. We didn’t get to use this here.
