Dr. Dean Edell: At the age of 5, Sarah Beard appears just like many of her peers. But not long ago, Sarah's world was very different. Colleen Beard: I knew something was wrong and to get a diagnosis almost in a way was a relief. Dr. Dean Edell: Sarah was diagnosed with Asperger syndrome. One of the many conditions that's classified as an Autism Spectrum Disorder. Catherine Lord: There's a lot to be learned about what are those very earlier signs. Dr. Dean Edell: If diagnosed early intervention can begin at a younger age. Catherine Lord: One of the earliest signs is a child who seems to understand some language, but doesn't respond to his or her name. Many kids with Autism don't point to draw people's attention to things. Dr. Dean Edell: Therapy generally focuses on task completion and social skills and communication. Catherine Lord: It's been truly wonderful to see, how many things people with Autism can do and things that we would not have probably dreamed about 20 or 30 years ago. Sarah: I'm not afraid anymore.
