Learn about Biodegradable Water Bottles

Vanessa: What if I tell you that by drinking one of the bottles of water behind me, you can reduce the on of the environment? Hi, I’m Vanessa Valera with Watch Mojo. And today, we’re going to behind plus one Canada’s first biodegradable bottle of water or join by David Smith and Michael Keeffe the founders. How does Plus One reduce the environmental impact? David: I guess the simplest way to say is the bottle is biodegradable so you can chunk this bottle in useful composure and 50 to 90 days, it completely goes back to an organic matter. Vanessa: What are the other benefits of that Plus One bottle? David: There are a lot of studies that show that there are chemicals that are leeching out of all the various plastic bottles into the water. Those are very toxic chemicals. They’re tracing ounce but that’s no worry. With our bottle, there are no chemicals to leech on the water. We’re jokingly said if you want, you could eat the bottle because there are no harmful elements in the bottle. I’m not sure it tastes good but you could eat the bottle if you wanted too. Vanessa: What is the BioPET taste test? Michael: If you take the two bottles, you take a regular PET bottle and PLA bottle and open them up, have a drink from each and then leave them on the counter overnight and taste the next one the next day. In order some PET, there’s a kind of funky little plastic flavor. That’s exactly what it is. It’s a plastic leeching into the water. And PLA water, you taste just water. Vanessa: Now, let’s talk about the Plus One philosophy? What is the difference between your company and all the other companies out there? David: Everyday there are about 70 million plastic water bottles that are sold in North America and the overall recycling rate right now is about 21%. So there is a 14 million bottles that are recycle, the water bottles every day and there are 56 million plastic water bottles that are going to landfill sites every single day. So the biggest impact that we hope to have with our company is that it’s much better for the environment. Michael: We get 20% of our profits into water development organizations, so we ensure that fresh clean water is supplied in various communities in developing countries.
