For the most part the scientific literature suggests that whole grain intake in general and fiber intakes specifically are associated with reduced risk of breast cancer and other cancers as well. There are number of mechanisms here, to some extent this relates to the metabolic benefits associated with fiber intake, such as lower levels of insulin. One of the more important elements is that a healthy diet rich in whole grains, rich in fiber, tends to be anti-inflammatory. And we have know that inflammation is one of the major driving forces behind the development of cancer overall and breast cancer in particular and if you can put that fire out, you can reduce your risk. There are in addition to fiber, nutrient properties of whole grains that confer health benefits. For example oats are a rich source of a unique class of anti-oxidants found almost nowhere else in the diet. So, whole grains there is no substitute, you really want to make these whole grains direct from nature a regular part of the diet to reduce your risk of chronic disease and promote your health.
