Female Speaker: What is the difference between a stomach ulcer and GERD? GERD or gastro-esophageal reflux disease occurs when gastric acid flows back into the unprotected esophagus. The stomach itself is normally protected from its own gastric acid by a special layer of cells and mucus. But when that protective layer is damaged gastric acid can erode the stomach lining, causing crater like ulcers. The most likely culprit, the bacterium Helico pylori, or H. Pylori which is believed to be responsible for approximately 80 percent of stomach and duodenal ulcers, the other twenty percent of ulcers are caused by the use of Non-Steroidal Anti-inflammatory medicines such as aspirin and ibuprofen products. Antibiotics and antacid medications are used to treat ulcers and in most cases, cure them.
